FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY) located in the heart of Harlem, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. CSOM values diversity and inclusion and believes they are essential to achieving excellence. There is a continuing shortage of primary care physicians in this country, creating an urgent need for more family practitioners, general internists, pediatricians and obstetrician/gynecologists in many communities. The shortage of African-American, Latinx, and others underrepresented medical professionals in inner city areas is particularly acute. Over forty years ago, City College decided to make a difference by developing the most unique physician training program in the nation, The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, which in the fall of 2017 became – The CUNY School of Medicine. Since its founding, the school has been committed to recruiting underrepresented populations into medicine, increasing medical services in under served areas, and increasing the availability of primary care physicians. We seek candidates whose research, teaching and/or service has prepared them to contribute to this overall mission.

The Practice of Medicine (POM) series of courses will teach clinical skills to students in the seven-year BS/MD program at the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program/CUNY School of Medicine. POM courses begin in the second year of the undergraduate program and continue until graduation. The Assistant Course Director (Clinical Professor) would provide students with practical skills which they can use to engage patients and be useful in a service learning context at clinical sites. The Assistant Course Director will also assist with course topics such as developing professional identity, teaching medical interviewing, physical diagnosis skills, medical presentation skills, clinical reasoning skills, cultural competence skills and work to prepare students to enter their clerkship year.

The Assistant Course Director will also work with the Course Director to accomplish the following

objectives:

  • Oversight of development, implementation and any required revision of curriculum, teaching, and

assessment methods for Practice of Medicine series courses

  • Teach and assess students in large and small group sessions ex PBLs, physical diagnosis, communication skills and clinical reasoning.

  • Creation and grading of the course assessments/exams

  • Design, and implement OSCEs

  • Remediate students

  • Advising and mentoring students

  • Developing and implementing annual faculty development programs for adjunct faculty

  • Participation in related CSOM committees

  • Participation in medical education research and/or other scholarly activities.

Individuals appointed as clinical professors – medical series are experienced practitioners or teachers in their professions or fields of expertise. The responsibilities of the position include teaching (including, in some cases, clinical instruction), and may include research. Clinical professors - medical series are full-time, non-tenure track positions.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have:

  • a M.D. or D.O. degree, be board certified, and must be a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of New York

  • previous experience as medical school course director and/or teaching experience in undergraduate

medical education for at least five years is strongly preferred.

  • demonstrated evidence of significant success teaching courses that inclusively and equitably serve a diverse student population

  • demonstrated excellence in teaching and experience with curriculum development is desired

  • the ability to combine administrative, education, and teaching responsibilities

  • outstanding leadership and communication skills with with faculty members across disciplines to develop and implement a new, integrated curriculum

  • willingness to participate in appropriate academic and scholarly activity to further the institution's contributions to medical education

  • willingness to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures and academic backgrounds

  • demonstrated satisfactory qualifies of personality and character, a record of achievements in his/her profession or field of expertise, and a willingness to cooperate with others for the good of the institution
