The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees in seven years. CSOM is seeking a Practice of Medicine (POM) Course Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE) Director. The POM courses are a three-year sequence of pre-clerkship clinical skills courses for students at Sophie Davis Program in Biomedical Education/CUNY School of Medicine’s BS/MD program. In addition to teaching students the skills of medical interviewing, physical diagnosis, and clinical reasoning, the course also teaches students about primary care by providing students with authentic learning experiences in a longitudinal primary care setting over three years (LCE).The LCE Director will work together with the clinical skills faculty and POM course directors to teach and administer the new POM courses. The hire will be in the non-tenure track title of Clinical Professor. Individuals appointed as Clinical Professors – Medical series are experienced practitioners or teachers in their professions or fields of expertise. The duties of the position include teaching (including, in some cases, clinical instruction), and may include research.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct the Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE) component of the POM courses, which is a three-year clinical placement for students in a primary care setting; includes working with clinical sites manager and course administrator to oversee student site placements and course experience.

  • Assist in the delivery of the POM courses to ensure that course content is delivered to meet the educational program objectives to which the courses are linked.

  • Teach large group sections related to the Co-Director’s area of expertise or interest.

  • Leads and teach POM small group sessions in clinical skills (communication skills, physical diagnosis, clinical reasoning).

  • Participate in ongoing teaching and assessment in other SDSBE/CUNY School of Medicine courses, including facilitation of PBL sessions in the integrated Organ Systems course, Intersession and EBM Small Group Sessions, Introduction to the Clerkships, Narrative and Reflective Medicine Seminars, etc.

  • Participate in hiring, faculty development, and evaluation of POM course faculty, including adjunct faculty and clinical preceptors.

  • Create and grade student assessments/exams; generate and submit student final course grades in a timely manner; identify and appropriately set a course of action for students who are failing or performing poorly.

  • Create and update annual course materials in keeping with the standards of the SDSBE/CUNY SOM courses, including the syllabus, LCMS+ course website, and curriculum map.

  • Collaborate with relevant faculty, educational committees, and offices on matters regarding course schedule, content, curriculum mapping and course review/evaluation.

  • Participate in other related SDSBE/CUNY SOM activities, including service on committees (ex: Admissions, Curriculum, Student Promotions, Ethics, etc.).

  • Participate in medical education research or other scholarly activities.

  • Oversee course administrative support staff.


The successful candidate will have a M.D. or D.O. degree, be board certified, and must be a physician licensed to practice medicine. Also, must have demonstrated satisfactory qualities of personality and character, a record of achievements in his/her profession or field of expertise, and a willingness to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

  • Previous experience as a medical school course director and/or teaching experience in undergraduate medical education for a least five (5) years is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and experience with curriculum development is desired.

  • Must have an ability to combine administrative, education and teaching responsibilities.

  • Must also possess outstanding communication and leadership skills in working with students and clinical faculty members.

  • Must be also be willing participate in appropriate academic and scholarly activity to further the institution’s contributions to medical education.
