The Dr. Derrick Griffith CUNY Prep School was founded in 2003 and is located in the Bronx. CUNY Prep’s mission is to develop lifelong learners who have the academic, personal and social skills necessary for higher education. We serve students ages 16-18 who have left traditional high schools, helping them to obtain their High School Equivalency Diploma and move on to success through college. We want our graduates to have access to a greater range of opportunities and go on to become active participants in community and civic affairs. As members of the CUNY Prep team, all staff must be extremely committed and passionate about working with urban youth. They must be highly motivated, self-directed, flexible, reliable, and open to learning new ways of thinking about their practice. CUNY Prep staff are active participants in creating an engaging, dynamic, and highly effective school environment. All staff are responsible for actively contributing to on-going civic and social events throughout the year.
The goal of the College Success Network is to address retention and success issues for CUNY Prep alumni in college. The department aims to serve as a bridge for CUNY Prep students from CUNY Prep to college, implement successful prescriptive and developmental advisement and counseling to students, and increase retention rates of CUNY Prep alumni in college. The College Success Coach reports to the Director and supports and tracks student success as part of the CUNY Prep Team. Other duties include but will not be limited to the following::
Register and schedule students into required courses prior to the start of the each semester.
Meet with students on a weekly basis through the developmental seminar and schedule individual advisement sessions throughout the semester.
Monitor student tutoring hours at the academic learning center and distribute student incentives.
Provide leadership in determining the needs of the students related to college access.
Assist students to assess and determine educational needs, career goals and academic potential.
Perform advising services including: academic and social/cultural support, technical assistance with financial aid, scheduling, and other college resources.
Create relationships with college faculty to gain a deep understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary for college success.
Serve as on-site support to all CUNY Prep graduates currently progressing towards a degree.
Serve as a student advocate resolve problems with admission, financial aid, or issues that may arise during the course of the student’s college experience.
Recommend students for CUNY Prep Internship program based on need for employment and academic stability.
Maintain reports, files and statistical data on students’ academic achievement and attendance for both program management and evaluation purposes.
MINIMUM A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) and two years' related experience. OTHER
Two years' of relevant advising, teaching or instructional experience (instructional coach or support specialist).
Strong understanding of college systems and organization with a commitment to the success of urban education and knowledge of issues related to post-secondary access.
Ability to work effectively on a team with a strong focus on data-driven outcomes.
Computer proficiency using academic, administrative, or financial programs, systems or databases.
Detail oriented and accurate with strong research, critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis and management skills.
Ability to work productively and collaboratively in a dynamic student-focused and responsive office.
Strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
Strong interpersonal communication skills with ability to work effectively with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and external constituents in a large, centralized and public university system.
Strong organizational and follow-through skills to execute work plans, prioritize work, coordinate multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides educational programs, academic advice, and counseling assistance to students in one of CUNY's comprehensive support programs.
Provides advice and counsel to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed
Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities
Develops interventions related to student academic status and success
Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection
Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming
Performs related duties as assigned.
