The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in 2018 as the 25th institution and the seventh professional school of The City University of New York. The new School builds upon and expands the work of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute, which has served the educational needs of working adults for nearly 35 years. The mission of SLU is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Labor and Urban studies to a diverse constituency, including adult learners and traditional-age students; 2) collaborate with other units of the University to expand higher educational opportunities to working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of New York City and State, and 3) serve the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting public forums and national conferences, and publishing a national journal to promote debate on issues critical to labor and working-class communities.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Operations, the Communications and Marketing Officer is responsible for creating and implementing an overall strategy to increase the visibility and enhance the reputation of the School. S/he will also be a leader with a proactive approach to the development and dissemination of communications and materials to promote the School, its programs, students, alumni, faculty, and staff. S/he will develop content and implement strategies for effective institutional communications consistent with the School's mission, as well as promote the image of the School through campaigns focused on media relations, legislative initiatives, community relations, and fundraising.

The Communications and Marketing Officer will:

  • Oversee and informs internal and external communities about all major School events and news stories; provide publicity for SLU programs and initiatives; assist individual departments with their messaging needs; highlight student, faculty, and staff achievements; promote new initiatives, programs, and events; and celebrate the achievements of students, faculty, alumni, and major supporters/donors through timely, high-quality production and distribution of communications via multiple media vehicles including websites, social media, newsletters, and electronic and printed publications.

  • Use industry-standard marketing techniques to develop creative content to brand and promote the image, mission, and accomplishments of the School, its students and its faculty, and work with individual departments to increase the visibility of their programs and fundraising effort

  • Develop and communicate the School's position on a variety of issues, with a view to enhancing the reputation and recognition of the School, and establishing a network of working relationships and collaborating on common objectives with a variety of government agencies and community organizations.

  • Cultivate regional media sources, including social media networks, and proactively connect with the press regarding stories about SLU.

  • Manage and issues press releases on behalf of the School, and facilitate access to School experts and/or spokespersons.

  • Coordinate a crisis communications team

  • Coordinate the review, development, updating, and production of official School publications including its catalogue, annual report, handbooks, etc., as well as departmental and program brochures and other materials.

  • Oversee and manage the content, organization, and currentness of the School’s website as well as links to various social media outlets.

  • Manage and develop professional and administrative support staff in the Office of Marketing and Communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in communications, marketing or equivalent work-experience strongly preferred

  • Eight years of relevant, demonstrated experience in journalism or agency public relations;

  • Media relations experience in higher education, CUNY and/or nonprofit setting strongly preferred.

  • Experience with the labor movement and/or social justice activism preferred

  • Strong relationships with national and/or local media preferred; familiarity and prior experience with media placements in prominent electronic media outlets preferred.

  • Working knowledge of press databases.

  • Proactive media pitcher, creative thinker, exceptional writer and energetic self-starter.

  • Excellent research, communication, interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills;

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders

  • Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills, with ability to lead and manage teams, and use strategic and tactical judgment to make decisions and handle various situations

  • Designs and executes a comprehensive strategic plan for marketing, advertising and communications

  • Develops overall advertising and media strategies to achieve image, awareness, enrollment, recruiting, and/or fundraising goals

  • Provide professional and managerial oversight of a broad range of marketing programs and tools, including digital, print, mail, broadcast, social networking, and other media

  • Manages and develops internal staff and external resources

  • Develops and analyzes key metrics of marketing effectiveness, as well as budgets and costs related to marketing programs and campaigns

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
