Full/Part Time: Full-Time

POSITION DETAILS

CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma and need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing, or mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. Math Start enrolls students who have been accepted to CUNY but have not met CUNY proficiency standards in mathematics and whose significant math needs indicate that they may have to take multiple semesters of developmental math before taking credit-bearing courses. Math Start operates semester-long programs as well as varying 8-10 week cycles during the year, including summer and during the evenings.

The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University's community colleges, New York City College of Technology and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education. Both CUNY Start and Math Start are recognized for their carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, as well as ongoing professional development.

CUNY Start delivers instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid classes that are both online and in-person. Online instruction is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching that is determined at the discretion of program management. Online work entails instruction on platforms such as Blackboard, Zoom, WebEx, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and which support the goals and practices of the program. During periods of remote teaching, the Math Program Specialist is responsible for work as delineated below in online or hybrid learning environments.

The CUNY Start Program seeks a specialist in mathematics to provide content-related support for its math curriculum and related instructional methods, and to provide professional development activities for teachers and tutors. The CUNY Start Math Specialist supports the on and off-campus training needs of new instructors to ensure that program goals are met and students remain well served. Essential duties of this position are to participate in campus-based math instructional teams working closely with CUNY faculty and administrators to train teachers and tutors on utilizing effective math skills development strategies and instructional delivery methods, as well as accurately assessing students' competencies for college readiness; and to collaborate with other math professional development team members, other instructional teams and curriculum developers, including advisement and reading/writing, to ensure proper integration of the math curriculum into the program's educational model and alignment with lead, core and cooperating teacher training. At times, the Math Specialist may be assigned to support lead/cooperating math teachers and teams and orient, train, observe and co-evaluate classroom performance. The position reports to the CUNY Start/Math Start Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Other duties include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Develop and conduct training workshops for math teachers and provide campus-based and/or online support to math teams, including teacher observations and feedback meetings.

  • Co-evaluate and monitor math teachers to successfully implement the curriculum.

  • Review formal math curriculum assessments and modify training approaches accordingly.

  • Review current practices and changes to CUNY's proficiency standards and criteria for academic placement, draft pertinent revisions to the curriculum and related components and advise teachers and program administrators on implementation.

  • Work with program administrators to discuss training and mentoring approaches, evaluate the impact of ongoing training and create progress reports.

  • Assist with evaluating the curriculum delivery of math instructional team members.

  • Assist with training math teachers at CUNY Start campuses and at other CUNY locations, including training math teachers online as appropriate.

  • Present the math curriculum and educational model to internal and external audiences.
