The Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, originally established in 1994, is one of three schools that comprise Baruch College of The City University of New York, one of the nation's outstanding public institutions of higher education. In 2016, the School received a historic $30M gift from entrepreneur and Baruch alumnus, Austin W. Marxe and changed its name from the School of Public and International Affairs to the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. The gift enabled an increase in scholarships and study abroad programs; the establishment of faculty chairs; and the development of public policy programming that convene with thought leaders for critical discussions on vital issues.
The mission of the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs is to empower the next generation of public and nonprofit leaders, advance knowledge about public life and policy, and engage communities across the city, nation, and world to foster effective, inclusive institutions and societies.The school offers undergraduate and graduate-level degrees in public policy and administration including the:Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs (BSPA), Master in Public Administration (MPA), Executive Master in Public Administration (EMPA), Master in International Affairs (MIA) and Master of Science in Education (MSEd) program in Higher Education Administration (MSEd-HEA).The Marxe School offers access to a wide range of cutting-edge policy and research programs that support public affairs education and social advocacy through itscenters: the Baruch College Survey Research; the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management; the New York Federal Statistical Research Data Center; the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research; and the Howard J. Samuels State and City Policy Center.
The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Baruch College President's Cabinet. The Dean is responsible for leadership of the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, planning and development, and for managing its programs to further enhance its quality and reputation.The Dean collaboratively sets standards for intellectual engagement and accomplishment; provides strategic vision and operational leadership based on best practices; ensures the accreditation of the School; vigorously promotes diversity, equity and inclusion in all of the School’s practices; builds community across faculty, staff, and students; ensures students are served by academic programs of the highest quality and effectiveness through assessment and continuous improvement; oversees systems and processes that ensure academic integrity and rigor, including program assessment, program review, departmental planning, and accreditation activities; advances improvements in faculty life; promotes and supports faculty scholarship and grant/contract-seeking pre-and post-tenure; encourages the use of proven effective pedagogies and experimentation in pedagogy and programming; oversees processes for faculty hiring and retention; builds external partnerships to support student academic and career preparation and faculty development and research.
As part of the President’s Cabinet, the Dean manages the implementation of the college’s strategic plan on the school level in close collaboration with all members of the academic leadership team. The Dean works with the vice presidents, deans, associate provosts, senior administrators, and staff across the College to conduct day-to-day operations, improve student success, and further the work of the School. The Dean formulates fundraising priorities for the School in collaboration with the Provost, faculty, and the Academic Council. The dean works closely with faculty on research grant planning activities and works in partnership with the Vice President for College Advancement and the development team to advance the case for funding engaging in fundraising activities to achieve support and develop additional financial resources for the School. The Dean will position the Marxe School as a leading regional and national public and international affairs/public policy school; and strengthen and expand relationships with both external and internal constituencies (both domestic and global).
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
Campus-specific qualifications: Candidates must have a record of innovative leadership and a dynamic academic vision for the future that will secure for the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs its competitive niche and reputation for excellence. Experience may have been gained as an academic administrator, professor, or leader within the not-for-profit, foundation, government, business, or other area that is relevant to a public affairs education at Baruch and should include pragmatic interaction with government agencies and nonprofit entities.
Candidates must also have a record of accomplishment in leadership positions; familiarity with complex academic institutions; effective communication and interpersonal skills; experience and ability to promote the School and secure resources; demonstrated interest in the issues concerning urban, metropolitan, academic institutions; exemplary personal and professional integrity; and credentials suitable for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Marxe School. Candidates must exhibit a clear commitment to undergraduate and graduate public and international affairs education and research; and a broad understanding of the challenges facing public and international affairs education in the United States and around the world. Candidates must have the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with administrators, faculty, students, staff, and external constituencies; and an appreciation and understanding of the need for collaboration and synergy among these groups to make critical decisions on academic priorities and the allocation of resources.
The next Marxe Dean will have deep appreciation of academic qualities, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, strong administrative abilities, high energy, political astuteness and a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Dean must have a great passion for public higher education and be equally passionate about the special history and mission of Baruch College and The City University of New York. S/he will have a record of success in research, scholarship, or professional experience that will support an appointment to the rank of professor in the School.
