POSITION OVERVIEW This is an exciting time to join the Institutional Advancement team at John Jay College as it transforms under new leadership and a new College president, Karol V. Mason. John Jay seeks a Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving as a key member of the advancement team to develop and execute the strategy for a comprehensive alumni relations and annual giving program. The director will develop programming, communications, and events to engage John Jay’s 63,000 alumni in meaningful ways and promote philanthropic support at the annual giving level.

The position reports directly to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, plans and leads all alumni relations operation for the campus, working independently as well as collaboratively across the college.

In addition to the CUNY title overview, the responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide strategic direction and long-range/short-range planning for all areas related to increasing alumni engagement and annual giving.

  • Research, develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a broad range of alumni engagement and annual giving programming including events, outreach, volunteer management and regional programs related to cohorts of the alumni population. May include, but is not limited to, reunion events, alumni weekend, mentoring and career development events, and programming for affinity groups.

  • Increase the annual giving program in terms of total dollars, percentage participation, consistency of giving and average gift size. Build tactical plans for achieving these goals and data-driven reports for measuring results. Manage John Jay’s Giving Day.

  • Develop a coordinated matrix of communication and solicitation strategies using direct mail, social media, phone/mail, personal visitation and volunteer engagement, all focused on shaping a sustainable tradition of annual support and increased alumni engagement.

  • Increase the number of identified and validated alumni and populate the database with up-to-date contact information so that they may be cultivated, solicited, and stewarded in a timely and consistent manner. Maintain current records on interests, activities, and connections related to their alumni and post-John Jay experience to foster greater engagement and build new and strong relationships.

  • Develop new alumni affinity groups and serve as the alumni staff liaison for existing alumni volunteer organizations. Create volunteer engagement opportunities through partnerships with Career Services, academic departments, and other units.

  • Supervise multiple professional staff as well as student assistants. Provide training and manage project assignments.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned and assist with special projects as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree and eight years' experience working in development, fundraising, alumni relations or related field in higher education required.


  • Annual giving and special event experience in higher education.

  • Excellent strategic and management skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the college, volunteers, alumni, donors, and other constituents.

  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning, marketing, communications and organizational skills. Cover letter and writing sample required.

  • A self-starter, results and detail-oriented individual who is comfortable working with and managing volunteers and as part of the broader Advancement team to support college fundraising goals.

  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.


Directs College alumni relations strategy and operations to develop an active and engaged alumni base.

  • Develops short and long term plans, goals and objectives to create and sustain strong relations between the College and its alumni base

  • Designs, implements and evaluates strategies and initiatives to increase involvement among alumni through various outreach and affinity programs

  • Oversees alumni communications, events and activities

  • Briefs executive management on department operations and performance

  • Prepares budget forecasts and authorizes allocation spending

  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with alumni donor and volunteers

  • Manages professional and clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
