FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership’s Department of Anthropology, Gender Studies, and International Studies invites applications for two Distinguished Lecturer positions to begin at the start of the Spring 2023 or Fall 2023 semester.
Distinguished Lecturers are experienced practitioners, or teachers who hold full-time, non-tenure track position with a maximum appointment period of seven years, subject to annual reappointment. We seek candidates with knowledge and experience in the United States on some combination of the following: social movements; leadership for social change; community organizing; political economy; race, class, gender and sexuality, and disability.
These Distinguished Lecturer lines are made possible by a partnership between CCNY’s Colin Powell School and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, with partial support for the positions provided by Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, the recently launched CUNY institute focused on training and supporting early and mid-career social justice leaders nationally. The people hired will be based in the Department of Anthropology, Gender Studies, and International Studies of CCNY’s Colin Powell School. They will teach and participate in programming in that department. They will also play a role in the intellectual development and instruction of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice. They will have the opportunity to contribute to the Colin Powell School’s Master in Public Administration Program, which has a distinct social justice focus, and the Distinguished Lecturers will have consortial appointments at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, which will include the opportunity to teach courses there.
We seek candidates who will be able to draw on their own ample professional experiences in order to teach courses and to mentor students as they develop their own professional goals and career paths. Candidates must have a commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population. Expertise and background in social movements, social justice leadership, women’s and gender rights, racial justice, health justice, and/or climate justice are especially attractive.
About the Colin Powell School
The Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership is the division of social sciences at CCNY and is comprised of five academic departments: Anthropology, Gender Studies, and International Studies; Economics and Business; Political Science; Psychology; and Sociology. It is also home to all of the College’s leadership development and public service programs, alongside a range of dynamic interdisciplinary programs including International Relations, Mental Health Counseling, Public Service Management, Women’s Studies, and the Honors Program for Legal Studies. With almost 4,000 students, the Colin Powell School is CCNY’s largest student division, and it offers a wide variety of traditional and interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degrees. About Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice
Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is a new CUNY institute designed to support a
diverse cohort of leaders from the communities at the forefront of social justice movements, who
can build collective power that can be wielded anywhere, from the streets to the halls of Congress.
Existing models of leadership in social justice are often tied to one theory of change or a single
community of practice, whether that’s street protests, workplace organizing, or lobbying on Capitol
Hill. But a new generation of leaders needs to fight for power across movements and from outside
and inside existing institutions. These leaders want to fundamentally understand power: how to
build it, how to use it, and how to share it with our communities. Leadership for Democracy and
Social Justice is an initiative of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at City
College of New York and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. The institute helps early
and mid-career leaders in social justice movements build power across disciplines and with the
communities that are at the forefront of social change.
About the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies
The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, established in 2018, is explicitly dedicated to
public service and social justice. Offering the only interdisciplinary curriculum in labor and urban
studies in the nation, SLU awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in those fields, as well as
credit-bearing professional certificates in areas such as public administration, public policy, health
care administration, and labor relations. SLU also collaborates with New York City’s labor unions
and other CUNY schools to offer a broad range of college-credit programs designed to give
workers the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement and economic
Bachelor's degree and a record of achievement in a profession or field of expertise related to teaching assignments. Also required is the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Candidates for the title of Distinguished Lecturer must preferably demonstrate the following characteristics:
• Experience in and commitment to the social justice leadership and movement building in the United States;
• An outstanding record of achievement in the applicant's field of expertise;
• Commitment to working with CCNY and SLU faculty and staff
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.
