The Colin Powell School’s Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) program prepares students to be leaders and managers in government, nonprofit organizations, and social enterprises. Our students bring a passion for solving social problems, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to serve with integrity.

Reporting to the Dean of the Colin Powell School, the Executive Director will be responsible for executing and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program including student recruitment and admissions; academic administration; alumni relations and engagement; partnership development; event planning and program logistics. The incumbent will supervise a team of two full-time employees and college assistants. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Recruitment, Admissions and Enrollment

Plans, implements, and assesses student recruitment strategies; manages admissions activities and liaises with Graduate Admissions Office; participates in on-campus and off-campus recruitment events; responds to inquiries from potential applicants; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation and appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicants’ goals; chairs the Admissions Committee, reviews applications, and conduct admissions interviews; awards financial assistance; and manages the on-boarding of new students.

Academic Management

Participates in strategic curricular planning; assists with preparing new elective course proposals and capstone projects; leads the recruitment and on-boarding of adjunct faculty; prepares course schedule and coordinates adjunct faculty appointments; works with the students, faculty and advisers to assess various needs and plans responses that promote students’ academic success; distributes teaching evaluation feedback to faculty; advises faculty on school, college and university policies and procedures; supports enrolled students with course registration; reminds of key processes and deadlines; and liaises with Registrar, Bursar, and Financial Aid.

Management of Scholarships and Fellowships

Oversees the Changemaker Scholarship Program including leading its curriculum and experiential learning components; builds relationships with community partners to expand internship opportunities; advises student’s projects on social innovation and social entrepreneurship; coaches and provides career mentorship to participants; and monitors key performance indicators and impact metrics.

Career Development and Alumni Engagement

Manages, oversees and assesses the effectiveness of the Career Development Program and career services offered to students and alumni; develops and implements strategies, events, and programs to engage graduates of the MPA Program and create a network of alumni; collects data and produces reports on employment outcomes; liaises with the Office of the Dean to develop and execute fundraising campaigns; and keeps a detailed database with alumni information.

Events, Financial, and Operations Management

Plans and implements a wide variety of events, including the new student orientation, lecture series, and workshops; manages the program budget processes, including planning and tracking semesterly expenditures; oversees the surcharge collection process; manages tax-levy, non-tax levy, and RF-CUNY expenditures; and oversees room scheduling, purchases, and vendor selection.

Marketing and Communications

Participates in designing and implementing marketing strategies; contributes to writing, editing, and creating program documents, donor reports, infographics and other promotional materials; ensures the program’s website is relevant and up-to-date; and oversees social media accounts and other online presence.


This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in a related field, preferably in Public Administration, Public Policy, International Affairs and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in public service.

The candidate should have excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and demonstrated interpersonal and written and oral communication skills. The candidate must be able to establish rapport and relate positively to people with a variety of interests, backgrounds, and points of view by using tact, diplomacy and discretion.
