The Department of Psychology at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a tenure–track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in Animal Behavior, with a focus on applied and/or basic research in canine behavior and cognition.

We seek an academically excellent scholar and an outstanding scientist to head our new Thinking Dog Center in Manhattan, which is part of a vibrant MA program in Animal Behavior and Conservation (ABC) ( in the Psychology Department of Hunter College. We are particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to teaching undergraduates in Psychology, and mentoring graduate students in our Animal Behavior and Conservation MA program. The chosen candidate will also be eligible for membership in the Ph.D. program in Cognitive and Comparative Psychology within the Graduate Center (CUNY). Scholars whose work cuts across existing departmental content areas (e.g., comparative cognition, animal communication, human-animal interaction, animal welfare, urban ecosystems or conservation) are highly encouraged to apply.

Duties include: Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The individual hired must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree and an active program of research that can attract undergraduate and graduate students. A strong research program is essential. Postdoctoral research experience is a plus. The potential to obtain external funding is necessary.

We seek an individual with a strong commitment and ability to work with diverse student populations. Candidates should have an outstanding record of scholarly publications commensurate with their career trajectory. Experience with public science communication is not required but preferred. The potential to obtain external funding is necessary for junior rank applicants and a history of such funding required for more senior candidates.


Salary is commensurate with experience and will be determined by the CUNY salary structure.
