FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The School of Education at Hunter College invites applications for Professorial position (Open Rank) of Childhood Education and Director of Childhood Education programs, to begin in Fall 2023. The School of Education comprises over 70 full-time faculty and approximately 3,000 students across doctoral, master’s, and bachelor programs spanning a diverse collection of certification and preparation programs for teachers, counselors, and educational leaders. With school and organizational partnerships across the five boroughs, the School of Education plays a major role in preparing the teachers, leaders, and counselors for New York City’s public schools. We approach these purposes with a shared belief that the promise of education to improve lives cannot be accomplished without addressing existing societal inequities and injustices.

Hunter College offers several tracks for certification in Childhood Education the candidate’s appointment may be in any of our three academic departments – Curriculum and Teaching, Educational Foundations and Counseling, or Special Education. In addition, certification programs in Special Education areas share courses in the Childhood Education program.

Goals and Expectations

  • Oversee the operation of childhood education programs (course planning, staffing, coordinating accreditation, student advising and admissions)

  • Collaborate with School of Education Office s (Admissions, Student Advising, Clinical Experiences, Institutional Research, Partnership Programs) to serve students enrolled in Childhood Education programs

  • Teach courses in Childhood Education or a related field (curriculum and instruction, subject area methods, literacy, educational foundations, educational psychology)

  • Conduct research

  • Work with program faculty to advance curricular and pedagogical innovation to support student learning

QUALIFICATIONS

For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor:

An earned doctorate in teacher education or a related field is required, as are a strong record of educational administration, the demonstrated ability to teach courses to candidates in Childhood education programs, and a thriving scholarship agenda in the applied professional fields aligned with the either the Department of Curriculum and Teaching or Department of Educational Foundations. A minimum of 5 years of experience teaching and/or working in complex urban settings is required.

We are seeking an experienced, innovative, pragmatic, field-focused scholar to provide leadership and direction for all Childhood Education areas. The successful candidate will have extensive teaching and research experience in the area of Childhood Education as well as knowledge, understanding and passion for work in urban schools. Successful candidates will possess excellent problem-solving skills, a passion for educational programs and administration, and a flexible, detail-oriented approach to handling complex matters with multiple moving parts. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in advancing diversity, inclusion and equity in their teaching and research.

Doctoral degree in Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or a related field; active research agenda; solid record of research publication and presentation; expertise in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; administrative experience in leading academic programs strongly desired.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in program administration

  • 5+ years of teaching

  • Experience as a PK-6 public school teacher or administrator

  • Demonstrated commitment to the department and institutional service

  • A commitment to engaged and equitable student learning as informed by current practices and scholarship such as anti-racist and culturally relevant pedagogies.

  • Experience in the use of emerging technology tools in teacher education

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The qualifications and experience necessary for this position will put the salary in the upper half of the salary schedule.

Assistant Professor: $52,267 - $99,532

Associate Professor: $67,784 - $117,805

Full Professor: $83,878 - $141,858
