GENERAL DUTIES

Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework

  • Manage and organize the lab and storage areas for effective and safe functioning of science classes

  • Handle, transport, store and dispose of chemicals, materials and equipment while adhering to safety and hygiene standards

  • Develop and set up lab demonstrations and exercises

  • Maintain and repair laboratory equipment

  • Train and supervise laboratory staff and students in the proper use and care of lab and safety equipment

  • Determine equipment requirements and coordinate acquisition of equipment

  • May supervise staff

  • Perform related duties as assigned

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

This position reports to the Asst Principal/Chair (Science) and performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.

  • Prepared, assemble, set up and distribute apparatus, equipment, audio-visual aids, materials and reagents for the performance of:

  • Teacher demonstrations in science classes, and

  • Individual and group experiments in the science laboratories

  • Maintain apparatus, equipment, audio-visual aids, supplies, chemicals and live material in usable condition and make minor repairs.

  • Manages the set-up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories

  • Determines equipment requirements; prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisition of equipment

  • Systematize the storage of supplies and chemicals in the science storerooms, preparation rooms and laboratories so that they are ready to use.

  • Be available to the instructor when needed to keep equipment in operational condition, to replenish reagents.

  • Construct or assemble pieces of apparatus as needed for the performance of demonstrations and experiments.

  • Systematize the storage of equipment and audio-visual aids in the stockrooms, storerooms, preparation rooms and laboratories and keep them in good repair and ready for use.

  • Apprise the chairman or supervisor of needed major repairs to science equipment.

  • Take adequate precautions to safeguard all science supplies and equipment against breakage, spoilage and theft.

  • Supervisor stockrooms and preparation rooms when students working on projects are present.

  • Receive and check the receipt of all science supplies as they arrive in the science department and complete and return the necessary receipt forms to the supply clerk.

  • Help prepare official departmental science supply reports at the request of the chairman or supervisor.

  • Tabulate science supply data under the direction of the chairman or supervisor.

  • Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards

  • Be thoroughly acquainted with and guided by the science safety bulletins including the hazards involved in the storage of scientific equipment and chemicals and the approved safety standards and the methods for storage and use of all supplies.

  • Take approved safety precautions in the transportation of all equipment and supplies to and from the science classrooms and laboratories.

  • Inform the students of laboratory hazards and the safety precautions that are necessary.

  • Perform related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree plus two years' related experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred: Experience in teaching in diverse schools; demonstrated multicultural competency and ability to build strong relationships with students from a variety of backgrounds; demonstrated commitment to building and sustaining an inclusive community.

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience ($73,572- $101,491).
