CUNY Human Resources Coordinator in New York, New York
The Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) at the City University of New York (CUNY) is responsible for developing the University’s human resources guidelines, standards, rules, and regulations. It enforces federal, state, and local employment laws and University mandates, as well as ensures compliance with the Board of Trustees’ policies and procedures regarding employment, including affirmative action and equal opportunity employment. OHRM administers employee benefits and professional development programs for University staff and oversees the administration of Civil Service examinations. Central Human Resources Office (COHR) is an integral part of OHRM and it provides HR services to University employees working at various locations across New York City and Albany, NY.
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the HR Coordinator performs comprehensive human resources duties and may be assigned to specialize in human resources functions related to timekeeping/leave management and recruitment, based upon current department needs.
The coordinator will also perform duties in all HR Functions including, payroll, on-boarding, talent management/recruitment, and benefits. The HR Coordinator is a front-line contact person for HR information, assistance, and problem resolution. The ideal candidate will be a capable intermediary for employees, co-workers, and internal and external stakeholders to triage issues from beginning to end, ensuring smooth coordination, follow-up, and timely workflows of accurate information and transactions. The coordinator informs employees about HR concerns based upon written policies, regulations, contract provisions (i.e. Collective Bargaining Agreements), tracking longevity and service increments, and established procedures and/or precedents; and proactively identifies and escalates urgent issues and exceptional problems to senior staff for resolution assistance.
Key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Assists in the review and streamlining of departmental processes.
Conducts new hire on-boarding and benefits orientations.
Processes employee changes in various HRIS, payroll, benefits, and retirement plan systems, and serves as a liaison to the carriers and university offices.
Confirms employment eligibility using E-Verify system, monitors the expiration of I-9 documents, and processes and tracks tuition waiver applications and background checks.
Coordinates mandated filings, reports, and submissions to various regulatory agencies (i.e. Joint Commission on Public Ethics, etc.).
Participates in recruitment and training activities.
Assists with initiative, project, and/or event planning, management; and execution.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree required.
Two years of human resources experience in a large organization.
Knowledge of CUNY preferred.
Knowledge of current federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
Computer proficiency using PeopleSoft based benefits, payroll, and recruiting systems plus standard Microsoft Office applications.
Detail-oriented and accurate with strong analytical, evaluative, and research skills.
Strong organizational and follow-through skills to prioritize work, manage multiple priorities; and meet deadlines in a time-sensitive office.
Strong work ethic and character with a high degree of personal integrity to work with the utmost discretion, maintain confidentiality and safeguard employee information, and handle documents with sensitivity and discretion.
Professional poise, courteous demeanor, flexibility, and composure under pressure.
Customer focused with ability to interact and work cooperatively and collaboratively on a team to help diverse internal and external constituency.
