The Office of Careers & Industry Partnerships (OCIP) at the City University of New York seeks Industry and Employer Engagement Specialists to identify career opportunities and grow hiring pipelines for CUNY students and graduates.

Specialists will engage with employers in defining workforce needs, identifying hiring challenges and opportunities, specifying skills and proficiencies needed to fill available roles, and exploring partnerships to help grow New York’s emerging industries.

This Initiative is funded through June 2023 and is subject to renewal depending on availability of funds.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Professional Advancement and working closely with the department chair and aspecialized Academic/Career Advisor, the Industry Specialist will serve as a key resource in cultivating industry/employment partnerships that will increase the number of high-quality paid internships and full-time job opportunities for students in the Department of Sciences.

The Department of Sciences at John Jay boasts one of the oldest and most prestigious Forensic Science programs in the country. The Department offers a Bachelor’s of Science, where students can choose to specialize in criminalistics, molecular biology or toxicology. The Department also offers a Bachelor's of Science in Toxicology and Cell and Molecular Biology. Using state-of-the-art equipment, the academic programs prepare our students for all levels of forensic science work in laboratories, in pursuit of careers as scientists, and to provide further education to those currently employed in crime laboratories and in related fields of public safety. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to:

Build a Community:

¿ Develop and execute an employer/industry engagement strategy with the goal of increasing the number of employer partners and deepening existing partnerships to drive paid internship and employment opportunities for students

¿ Secure partnerships with employers offering paid internship, clinical placement, and full-time job opportunities to students in the Sciences major

¿ Continuously cultivate and grow employer relationships in the law enforcement/criminal justice field, with a particular focus on careers that integrate the development and use of technology (e.g., big data, biometrics, crime mapping)

Establish a Peer Network:

¿ Coordinate with other industry specialists, campus career offices and CUNY Central Office to generate employer leads and build upon existing relationships and maximize industry partnerships benefiting the Sciences students

¿ Work with employers to increase their participation in campus career readiness activities such as virtual and in-person career exploration events, career panels, and information sessions

¿ Collaborate with campus partners to expand outreach to students and to publicize employment and internship opportunities using digital and social media platforms

¿ Identify opportunities and facilitate collaboration between faculty and employer partners to infuse curriculum with industry-relevant content

¿ Engage in relevant business communities by attending events and conferences and serving on advisory boards and industry councils, where appropriate

Create Pathways:

¿ Secure paid internships and full-time job offers for Sciences majors

¿ Analyze market trends to determine market conditions and talent needs, in-demand occupations, internship and full-time hiring requirements as well as employer recruitment processes and share with faculty, advisors, and the broader campus to encourage alignment with in-demand skills

Communicate and Improve:

¿ Track student internship and employment experiences to assess and refine student and employer partner performance to ensure both student and employer needs are being fully met

¿ Participate in CUNY-wide training and events and utilize common tools to track, collect, and share data around employer partners, internship and job opportunities as well as campus engagement activities using CRM systems, databases and other data collection tools.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.


We seek highly motivated, flexible and resourceful people who can cultivate a wide range of partnerships with employers and other industry partners. Candidates should be highly organized, detail- oriented strategic thinkers with a demonstrated track record of meeting established targets and deadlines.

Required Qualifications:

The minimum requirements for this position are a Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of relevant professional work experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience in career services or economic or workforce development

  • Experience with community and business outreach, ideally in implementing talent acquisition, outreach strategies, and business developmen

  • Understanding of business, recruitment and hiring practices in the field of science, healthcare or a closely related field, particularly relating to entry-level talent needs and paid internship and job opportunities

  • Proficiency in using social media platforms, webinar tools such as Zoom and Webex, CRM and other databases for data collection. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel


Supports an academic internship program providing career development and professional work experience.

  • Acts as liaison between the College and employer sponsors, monitoring the success of students' internship experiences

  • Supervises student internships, assuring adherence to related College and governmental policies and regulations

  • Creates and conducts orientation sessions and workshops for students in the internship program; coordinates applications, interviews, and placement as part of overall student outreach

  • Provides faculty orientation and development related to internship programs

  • Implements and evaluates competencies and other success factors

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
