The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in 2018 as the 25th institution and the seventh professional school of The City University of New York. The new School builds upon and expands the work of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute, which has served the educational needs of working adults for nearly 35 years. The mission of SLU is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Labor and Urban studies to a diverse constituency, including adult learners and traditional-age students; 2) collaborate with other units of the University to expand higher educational opportunities to working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of New York City and State, and 3) serve the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting public forums and national conferences, and publishing a national journal to promote debate on issues critical to labor and working-class communities.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Operations, the Institutional Research Director is responsible for a broad range of research and reporting activities, including responsibility for data collection, data analysis, and data reporting for both internal and external audiences and providing useable management information to key constituents by delivering evidence for data informed planning, decision-making and programmatic formulation. S/he will have a long-term strategic focus that contributes to the overall achievement of the School’s priorities and who is expert in the broader guidelines in higher education that lead to meeting all standards.

As an integral part of the School’s commitment to excellence, accountability, and continuous quality improvement, the Director ensures that all academic and research programs, student support services, administrative units, and community service programs engage in best practices for outcomes assessment at the course, program, and institutional levels. S/he will lead the School in continuous quality improvement; obtain, provide, and curate informative data to drive decision-making and resource allocation; serve as an expert resource for outcomes assessment for institutional strategic planning; support academic programs in meeting the standards of accreditation by their professional accrediting bodies; and ensure compliance with all standards of accreditation.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the strategic planning cycle envisioning the upcoming years of activities;

  • Develop and institutionalize systems to assess the overall effectiveness of the School in meeting its stated mission, and provide regular and frequent reports on the results of these assessments to the School Dean as well as to the broader School Community;

  • Maintain an up-to-date and thorough acknowledgement of accreditation requirements (at institutional and program levels) and communicate changes and other important information to appropriate campus personnel;

  • Ensure that the School conducts academic program assessment in accordance with School and university policies

  • Work with academic department chairs to design and implement effective student learning outcomes assessment processes, and monitor curricular/instructional changes and improvements resulting from these assessments;

  • Oversee the extraction and transformation of transactional data from CUNY's systems of record.

  • Oversee the modeling of transactional data into appropriate structures for reporting and analysis, and prioritize the building and maintenance of new physical infrastructure.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' relevant experience required.

Other Qualifications:

  • Eight years' of higher education experience in assessment, planning (student learning and institutional effectiveness) and regional and special accreditation;

  • Experience in a college or university setting performing data extraction, data modeling, and database administration;

  • Demonstrated ability (minimum of two years’ experience) in leading strategic planning and accreditation activities;

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative skills and experience in research methods and design and statistical analyses including predictive modeling and hierarchical/longitudinal analysis;

  • Effective oral, written, organizational, and graphic presentation skills and the ability to write and communicate data-rich reports that are easily understood by various stake holders;

  • Experience with assessing the effectiveness of college services at the program, unit and institutional levels and making recommendations for institutional improvements;

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully and collaboratively with faculty and personnel at all administrative levels;

  • Ability to engage in evidence-based planning and decision-making as well as educating and engaging the community in these activities;

  • Familiarity with the Standards of Accreditation for accrediting agencies;

  • Participation in professional research, assessment, and institutional effectiveness organizations at the regional, state, and national levels, keeping current in all aspects of the profession;

  • Forward thinking, innovative and proactive in identifying problems and implementing evidence-based improvements;

  • Advanced degree in a related discipline strongly preferred (an advanced degree may substitute for up to two years of the required experience);

  • Knowledge of policies and issues important to higher education;

  • Ability to work independently and also function effectively and collaboratively in a team;

  • Intermediate to advanced computer proficiency using standard administrative and academic systems and programs.
