POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Associate Director for Transfer Advising, and working closely with the Veteran Services Director, Veteran Certifying Officer, Admissions, Testing and Evaluation, and other academic advisors, the Instructional Advisor will participate in the orientation, advisement, and registration of undergraduate Veteran and International students.

In addition to the general duties, this position will also be responsible:

-Observe work of advisors, interns and student staff to evaluate performance and to recommend changes that could strengthen teaching/advising skills.

-Plan and conduct staff training programs dealing with classroom workshops, group dynamics facilitation, instructional materials and teaching aid.

-Disseminating information on college and CUNY policies and regulations and staying abreast of changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, college-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates.

-Conduct or participate in workshops, committees, and conferences designed to promote the intellectual, social, and physical welfare of students

-Train advisors and administrative staff in advising procedures, materials and specific rules regulations pertaining international and veteran students.

-Confer with John Jay offices and administrators to obtain knowledge of subject areas and to relate advising materials and procedures to specific needs and requirements for veteran and international students.

-Advising Veteran and International students on academic requirements, selection of courses, and steps toward graduation. Additionally, assist them with relevant enrollment management activities such as readmission, declaration of major, assessment of military credits, adhering to regulations for military benefits, and compliance with visa status for international students.

-Develop questionnaires, and procedures that measure the effectiveness of advising curricula and use - these tools to determine whether program objectives are being met.

-Organize production and design of degree requirements materials for veteran, international and academic probation students.

-Engaging in professional development activities such as joining professional organizations, staying current with professional standards and literature, and building information technology skills to enhance work performance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in student personnel administration, higher education, social work, counseling, or related field preferred.

  • A minimum of (1) year of experience working directly with undergraduate students in a higher education setting is strongly preferred (of the total required 4 years' related experience required).

  • Direct advising experience with one or more of the following student populations preferred: veteran students, international students, transfer students, adult learners, or students in academic difficulty.

  • The ideal candidate will have an understanding of J-1 and F-1 regulations and the U.S. DHS Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required

  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse faculty, staff and student population while representing the Academic Advising Center and the College to internal and external constituents required.

  • Program design and implementation experience.

  • Deep understanding of the challenges that veteran and international students face while completing their degrees.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population.

  • Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students

  • Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses

  • Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements

  • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits

  • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines

  • Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling

  • Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed

  • May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling

  • May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
