POSITION DETAILS

CUNY Online was launched in Spring 2022 at The City University of New York as the in-house online education and digital learning solution to enable CUNY colleges to expand and enhance their online program portfolios, support services for online students and expertise in online teaching and learning. As a new educational service unit within the University Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), CUNY Online is the primary provider of feasibility, design, development, marketing, training and support of CUNY Online educational resources and professional development opportunities supporting college campus-based undergraduate and graduate courses and degree and certificate programs across the University system.

CUNY Online seeks multiple Instructional Designers to develop and deliver high-quality online education for the University. Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design for CUNY Online, the Instructional Designers will create online courses and content across a variety of academic disciplines that facilitate the achievement of student learning outcomes and contribute to faculty development for online teaching across CUNY. The Instructional Designers will work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment to complete campus course development projects, provide effective course and instructional design services, and create and deliver training workshops to faculty. They will partner with faculty and subject matter experts to design and develop courses that leverage evidence-based practices in online learning and universal design principles. They will also manage, recommend and produce instructional multimedia for course design and development. Moreover, the Instructional Designers will serve as ambassadors for CUNY Online by sharing expertise, meeting or exceeding client expectations, building meaningful and collaborative relationships with individuals across the University, and keeping current with research and development in the online learning field.

In addition to the job summary above and CUNY Title Overview below, other essential duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Identify, design, and deliver technology solutions to meet online teaching and learning needs; find the best solution for collaboration and design in all situations; troubleshoot, reassess and pivot when needed;

  • Apply standards for online pedagogy, multimedia learning, and program design to ensure the quality of online courses and evaluate courses according to those standards;

  • Apply pedagogical perspectives on accessibility and universal design, open education, inclusive design and DEI, and alternative assessment to design and development;

  • Build, review, edit, and update course sites, tools, and course materials; develop and/or apply writing and visual style guides;

  • Track and organize course materials and assets; record metadata, assess media usage based on usage terms and context;

  • Collaborate with other instructional designers and internal/external team members to design, produce, refresh, and evaluate quality online courses; mentor and peer advise other instructional designers as needed;

  • Develop and deliver faculty trainings and workshops; support faculty with the utilization of their online courses;

  • Participate in planning, implementing, and assessing course development strategies and workflows, and liaising with multimedia, data, and other teams;

  • Perform LMS administration functions for Blackboard (current system) and D2L (new system) as necessary.

NOTES: 1) Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work on-site in the office.

2) Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM

  • Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required.

PREFERRED

  • An advanced degree in instructional design, online education, or a directly related discipline strongly preferred (may count for up to two years of the required experience).

  • Direct experience with online instructional design and digital media, working in a team of instructional designers, and consulting with faculty or other subject matter experts.

  • Familiarity with methods, approaches, and existing and emerging technologies for supporting faculty in the design, development, and delivery of online learning in higher education.

  • Experience with online learning environments, learning management systems (LMS) architecture, and online course authoring tools, such as D2L, Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Kaltura, Expand, or other technologies.

  • Experience with video and multimedia production, including script writing, recording, editing and using related software such as Adobe’s suite of tools, plus experience with other learning and multimedia tools and platforms (WordPress, Captivate, Articulate, video hosting platforms).

  • Demonstrated skill applying the Quality Matters Standards to university-level online courses, providing

feedback to faculty, and assuring modifications to achieve compliance.

  • Knowledge and application of Agile and SAM (successive approximation model) methodologies.

  • Effective writing, editing and presentation skills to clearly document and communicate processes for various audiences in several report formats (visual, narrative).

  • Proactive and collaborative work style with strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse administrators, faculty, staff and external constituents, as well as an individual contributor.

  • Dependable with effective organizational, time management and priority setting skills to manage multiple and shifting priorities and projects to meet deadlines, plus ability to thrive in a demanding and multi-faceted office.

  • Computer proficiency using academic and administrative systems and databases, Microsoft Office programs, and remote/virtual meeting and collaboration tools (Office 365, MS Teams, Zoom, WebEx, Bootcamp).

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

  • Provides day-to-day support for users of instructional systems

  • May supervise a College help desk related to academic technology, supervising and training staff

  • Designs, develops, and delivers training and orientation sessions on the use of instructional technologies

  • Assists in demonstrating the practical application of computers and communications technology for classes and workshops for faculty or students

Salary range is $79,188 - $99,532, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and education.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022

City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the Emblem Health HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period.

An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to Emblem Health. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by Emblem Health before the exemption is granted.
