The City University of New York's (CUNY) Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) provides central support for the University's information technology (IT) and telecommunication needs. CIS key roles include: supporting the enterprise IT needs of the University; developing new technologies that advance or support the University's core mission; building, upgrading and maintaining the University's network; supporting enterprise applications; operating the University Data Center; operating a central help desk to support enterprise services; developing a University IT Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plan; and leading the development of University's ERP Project, CUNYFirst.
CUNY seeks an experienced professional to oversee the University’s efforts to make its information technology accessible to individuals with disabilities, as required by law. The IT Accessibility Program Officer will identify and suggest potential solutions to deliver accessible technology throughout the University’s technology portfolio (websites, online courses, online learning platforms and video captioning, etc.) based on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA standards. The IT Accessibility Program Officer will plan and develop these initiatives at the University’s Central Office, and provide expert guidance and support to implement these solutions across CUNY’s colleges, departments, institutions and programs.
Reporting to the Director, Management Analysis and Communications in CUNY’s Office of Computing and Information Services, the Program Officer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Develops and plans the University’s program to meet technology accessibility standards and other best practices and statutory accessibility standards as they are developed and enacted.
Oversees compliance activities, including website remediation, video captioning, and other efforts to achieve compliance with required accessibility standards.
Identifies and communicates best practices and statutory accessibility standards as they are developed and enacted.
Develops processes to evaluate accessibility of IT being procured by the University.
Works with Office of General Counsel to provide requested information to relevant state and federal agencies reviewing CUNY’s compliance with legal mandates regarding technology accessibility.
Develops and manages a budget to procure accessible technology, accessibility training, and related acquisitions.
Coordinate and implement training programs for web designers, application developers and content providers, to incorporate accessibility into online content produced in-house or by third-parties.
Develops and maintains materials and other resources to support the ongoing implementation of CUNY’s accessibility program for CUNY stakeholders.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.
Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Disability Studies, Project Management, or related fields.
Experience providing guidance on compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Rehabilitation Act, and other relevant federal and state laws in a complex institutional or public sector environment.
Familiarity with WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility standards and guidelines.
Knowledge and experience with assistive technologies (JAWS, VoiceOver, Dragon NaturallySpeaking).
Experience with accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes.
Strong organizational and project management skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively and independently lead projects to completion.
Effective communication skills to facilitate group discussions and communications, and ability to deliver written materials and presentations.
