GENERAL DUTIES

I.T. Assistants perform entry-level professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Assistants work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar based on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation. They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Classroom and Lab Support Services (CLSS), a division of the Department of Information Technology (DolT), leads in the development and deployment of new educational technology and provides the training required to effectively integrate technology into instructional programs across campus. CLSS provides a multitude of services assisting the John Jay faculty, staff, and students to achieve their instructional technology development and productivity goals including, but not limited to, professional development and training, campus computer labs, classroom technology services, consultation, and online training resources.

Reporting directly to CLSS Director, Coordinator will be responsible for managing all CLSS

daytime technical staff (7:30AM - 3:30PM or 8AM- 4PM shift).

In addition to the general duties, the IT Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Directing the receipt of issue/emergency calls and diagnosis of equipment problems;

  • Proactive project management for both recurring/ongoing projects and new projects;

  • Technical personnel management, including scheduling, coordination with shift Lead Tech and workload distribution;

  • Assigning, managing, and monitoring in-house training for staff;

  • Providing upper-level technical assistance for support staff as needed, including field work;

  • Coordinating with Evening Tech Support Coordinator for projects, reporting, and staffing requirements/issues;

  • Management and organization of inventory, work documentation, training materials, shared files, and other resources;

  • Establish and maintain guidelines, methods, procedures and policies regarding IT on campus;

  • Supervision and review of technicians including fair and decisive evaluations based on reviews of work assignments, techniques, and ability to grasp new concepts/skills;

  • Independently researching new technology and suggesting efficient alternative solutions when possible;

  • Other duties/projects as assigned by CLSS Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  2. A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position. Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)

  3. Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following: An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate's degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

  4. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  5. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This title has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desktop Support/IT environment.

  • Windows and Mac OS.

  • Norton Ghost/ Imaging.

  • Familiarity with A/V and presentation equipment, such as projectors, audio controllers and

lecture podiums.

  • High-volume network printer maintenance.

  • Experience with work order applications, such as TrackIT.

  • Good written and interpersonal skills.

  • Previous supervisory/ managerial experience.

  • Familiarity with classroom network management software.

  • Knowledge of Linux programming.

COMPENSATION

For Level 1:

New hire: $ 45,464 * (subject to the new contract implementation).

Incumbent: $ 51,374 (subject to the new contract implementation).

*This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months for employment

only.
