Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation. They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

IT Assistant




The Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) at the City University of New York (CUNY) support the IT and telecommunications needs of CUNY's 24 colleges. CIS supports enterprise IT and applications; develops new technologies that advance University's core mission; builds, upgrades and maintains the University's network; operates the University's Data Center and help desk; develops disaster recovery and business continuity plans; and leads the CUNYfirst Enterprise Resource Planning Project (ERP), which integrates 25 university systems, covering student administration, financial management, and human resources.

Working under the direction of the University Executive Director of Technology, the Junior IT Analyst is primarily responsible for performing technical work related to the configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting of IT processes supporting the Application Development and CUNYfirst Production Support units.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in administering the Administrative Data Warehouse, an Oracle database that obtains data from CUNYfirst.

  • Monitors jobs within Administrative Data Warehouse related to CIS/TRS Payroll Integration, and to ensure there are no errors and/or performance issues.

  • Collaborates with application owners, DBA, and Data Warehouse teams to troubleshoot errors and performance issues.

  • Configures and troubleshoots cases assigned to production support and application development teams.

  • Creates documentation for best practices and SOP for standardized troubleshooting, to be used by Development team.

  • Serves as departmental liaison for CRM ticket management.

  • Assists with CIS technology deployments, as well as other enterprise-level special technical projects.

  • Assists with training sessions for the user community.

  • Maintains job-related records and documentation as necessary and prepares reports as needed.

  • Maintains full-time and consulting resource calendar.

  • Provides telephone and deskside technical support to administrators as needed.

  • Stays abreast of computer technology beneficial to CIS; recommends and implements new services and technologies, including new hardware and software releases and upgrades; researches and tests hardware and software to maintain or enhance user services; recommends the purchase of such materials.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  2. A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position. Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)

  3. Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following: An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate's degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

  4. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  5. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This title has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


The ideal candidate should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience in PeopleSoft application.

  • Experience with Oracle relational database management systems, and working knowledge of Oracle Databases.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, reflected in the ability to form successful cooperative partnerships with both internal and external personnel.

  • Organizational skills, including the flexibility to work successfully with multiple priorities.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, writing, and presentation skills.

*This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only.
