The Virtual Infrastructure and Storage Administrator is a self-motivated, hands-on IT professional responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, troubleshooting daily issues and creating solutions for improving the Virtual Infrastructure and Storage infrastructures with products like vSphere, Horizon 7.*, VRealize and NetApp NAS; including some administration of Windows 2008/2012/2016 servers and Linux Environment. Reporting to the System Administrator, the Virtual Infrastructure and Storage.

Reporting to the System Administrator, the Virtual Infrastructure and Storage Administrator duties include but are not limited to:

  • Install, Configure, Update, Patch and Troubleshoot VMware infrastructure (VMware ESXi server, VMFS, vCenter, VMware VMotion, VMware DRS, etc…).

  • Install, Configure, Update, Patch and Troubleshoot NetApp Storage infrastructure (Storage controller, disk shelves, storage arrays, etc…).

  • Administer and manage NetApp versions Data ONTAP, 7-mode, and cluster-mode; including provisioning storage LUNS, network access the storage via iSCSI/FCoE.

  • Design, Monitor, Troubleshoot and Update Linux and Windows VDI pools/desktops in VMware Horizon 7.* Environment.

  • Perform virtualization and data center project work when assigned.

  • Manage and troubleshoot issues that may arise with Cisco UCS hardware or software.

  • Work on all levels and types of issues for Virtualization, Storage and VDI.

  • Utilize technical knowledge of Windows, Linux, VMware, Cisco and NetApp to facilitate agile automation of CUNY SPS virtual environments.

  • Provide system performance and tuning as well as root cause determination in the event of failure.

  • Document network infrastructure using Microsoft Visio, PDF, etc. and update internal wiki knowledge base.

  • Conduct ongoing activities and testing to keep the virtualization infrastructure and associated services highly available and redundant for all workloads.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  2. An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus three years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position

  3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  4. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This job has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


  • Experience with VMware ESXi and the ability to demonstrate high level of expertise through the successful completion of complex tasks/projects assignments.

  • Experience monitoring and managing SAN and NAS infrastructures (NetApp filers, Synology, Dell Compellent) with the ability to demonstrate extensive knowledge of NetApp ONTAP (7-Mode and Cluster-mode).

  • Working knowledge of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environment such as VMware Horizon 7.*

  • Working knowledge of Windows 2008/2018/2016 and Linux servers (Ubuntu, CentOS).

  • Knowledge of configuring and upgrading the Cisco FlexPod components (Cisco Nexus switches, Cisco UCS servers, Fabric Interconnects, etc…).

  • Experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash scripts, or equivalent scripting languages to automate and integrate systems.

  • Experience working with TCP/IP networking including management and troubleshooting tools such as ping, DNS, traceroute, SSH, nmap or Wireshark.

  • Experience working with public clouds – e.g., Amazon Web Services, Azure, Rackspace or Digital Ocean.

  • Demonstrated ability to articulate business needs and to translate these into technology solutions.

  • Excellent analytical skills, good project management skills, commitment to high quality customer service.

  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment.

  • Awareness of IT industry trends and changes affecting medium to large institutions.

  • Strong communication skills involving written, oral and presentations.

  • A concern for accuracy, details, and quality.
