POSITION DETAILS
Hunter College of The City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications and nominations for the position of Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean of the School of Education. Located in the heart of Manhattan, Hunter College is the largest college in CUNY and one of the oldest public colleges in the country. With more than 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in more than 170 areas, Hunter’s student body is as diverse as New York City itself. This position will provide the next Dean with a unique opportunity to lead the School of Education as Hunter continues to build its research profile and reimagines its strategic vision.
Founded in 1870 as New York City’s first teacher-preparation school, the Hunter College School of Education is dedicated to the development of deeply thoughtful, knowledgeable and highly effective teachers, administrators and counselors and to the advancement of scholarship that will improve knowledge about and the conditions of our highly diverse, urban community. The School of Education supports the Hunter College mission to cultivate intellectual and personal development, encourage social and civic engagement, and inspire a lifelong zest for learning in the students of New York City. To that end, we prepare approximately 3400students annually in over 40 graduate and undergraduate programs – including an Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership – to assume key roles in PreK-12 schools and school districts, research and policy centers, and community agencies. Approximately 10% of all New York City teachers are trained by our School of Education.
Reporting to the Provost and President of the College, the Dean will have the vision and experience to advance the goals of the Hunter College Strategic Plan, uphold our high standards for faculty research, teaching, and service, and implement policies and practices that promote student success.The Dean will be expected to enhance the school's profile, visibility, and effectiveness by providing intellectual leadership, facilitating a culture of innovation and collaboration, and serving as a strong advocate for faculty work. As the chief academic officer of the School of Education, the Dean will be responsible for:
Developing and implementing a strategic plan for the school that aligns with the Hunter College mission and vision and our rich tradition of scholarly achievement;
Recruiting and hiring diverse faculty, administrators and staff to ensure equity;
Promoting faculty professional developmentand evaluating and reviewing faculty for reappointment, tenure and promotion, scholarly leave (sabbaticals), and special assignments;
Maintaining the high-quality academic programs by ensuring that the school meets accreditation standards and targets for student recruitment and enrollment and that the curriculum integrates best-practices for teaching and learning;
Developing new and innovative programs at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels to meet the emerging needs of Education stakeholders in New York City;
Managing the school’s resources by making budgetary decisions, assessing and recommending candidates for faculty appointment, and allocating space;
Collaborating with community stakeholders, government agencies, and private donors to develop and leverage resources and with the Deans of other schools at Hunter to provide joint degree programs and shared initiatives;
Supporting career readiness as our graduates prepare to secure employment or gain admission to graduate or professional schools; and
Supervising the work of the Hunter College Campus Schools – Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.
The Dean will be a dynamic, experienced professional with vision and commitment to urban education. S/he must be a proven administrator with the organizational skills and political savvy to navigate in a complex academic setting and forge collaborations within a diverse group of faculty, administrators, school partners, and the broader educational community. The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate in an education-related discipline with a strong record of scholarship and the ability to facilitate and lead faculty in teaching, scholarship, research, and professional service. S/he will also bring an engaging and persuasive personal presence and an aptitude for promoting the school to a wide range of constituencies.
VACCINE REQUIREMENT
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary commensurate with education and experience ($200,000 - $268,010).
