Media Services Technicians under supervision or direction, perform technical work of varying degrees of difficulty in the set-up, operation, training, troubleshooting, general maintenance and repair of digital/analog, audio-visual, video production, DVD, computer system, digital photography, presentation, recording, projection, duplication, and related broadcast production equipment in a classroom, shop, studio or in the field. Media Services Technicians must have a general knowledge of Windows and Apple based computers along with pertinent software. They may transport equipment for on-site use or shop repair, as well as operate a motor vehicle for such purposes. All Media Services Technicians perform related work.

ASSIGNMENT LEVEL I- Under supervision, performs work of ordinary difficulty, as follows:

  • Sets up, operates, does routine preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs on all types of projection equipment, portable public address systems, audio digital recorders, radios, cameras and related equipment.

  • Operates and maintains video production equipment.

  • Operates video and audio duplication equipment.

  • Prepares equipment requisitions; maintains inventory and repair records.

  • Transports equipment for on-site use or shop repair.

  • Assists in the training of students and/or instructors in the operation and minor routine maintenance of audio-visual, video production and related electronic equipment.

  • Makes minor repairs to video recording equipment, video receiver/monitors and related television production components.

  • May supervise and/or train part-time or temporary employees.

Operates motor vehicle, as necessary.

ASSIGNMENT LEVEL II- In addition to Level II duties, incumbents will also perform those tasks performed by Level I Media Services Technicians. Under general supervision performs work of greater difficulty, as follows:

  • Makes complete repairs on all types of projection equipment, portable public address systems, audio recorders, radios, and related equipment.

  • Trains students, instructors and other personnel in the operations, general maintenance and minor repair of audio-visual and related electronic equipment.

  • Evaluates the performance of new equipment and facilities; prepares reports on evaluation findings.

  • Requisition supplies and equipment, solicits bids from outside parts vendors.

  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of subordinate personnel.

ASSIGNMENT LEVEL III- In addition to Level III duties, incumbents will also perform those tasks performed by Level I & II Media Services Technicians. Under general supervision performs work of greater difficulty, as follows:

  • Installs and performs initial system checkout on video production equipment.

  • Interprets system schematic wiring diagrams.

  • Assists campus departments with technical problems.

  • Supervises all phases of equipment and supplies purchasing, from preparation of initial requisitions to vendor liaison for expeditions delivery and payment.

  • May supervise or operate a single facility of a technical service (e.g., repairs shop, media duplication offices, field repair center), supervises the personnel in such facility.

  • Participate in designing new facilities and specialized devices.

Information Technology (IT) is the division of the Graduate Center responsible for media, voice, video, and data systems and services. The mission of this unit is to promote, facilitate, and support the effective use of technology in the learning process, in instruction and research, and in processing and accessing institutional information.

Reporting to the Director of IT Client Services, the Media Services Associate provides proactive and reactive support for all audiovisual (AV) technologies including video/ collaboration systems in conference, training, auditoria, and/or public spaces as well as supporting desktop video conferencing software.

This position is based at the GC-ASRC and will be assigned to GC-Fifth when necessary. Hours for this position are from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday with flexibility as necessary to provide evening and weekend support for all GC locations. This position is 100% in person.All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus (or office).

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Sets-up, operates and breaks down a wide array of audiovisual equipment, components and systems, including lecture capture and related equipment from basic to high-end audio, video, projection, videoconferencing, sound and lighting equipment, as well as associated desktop and/or laptop computers

  • Provides intermediate-to-complex troubleshooting support for all AV and conference room technologies; facilitates in-house resolution where possible and consults with the Director for the Division of Client Services for additional support when necessary

  • Administers and manages the Zoom Videoconferencing/Streaming System, Video Streaming Server, Audio Conferencing and Web Conferencing infrastructure at the application level

  • Administers and manages the Distributed Digital Signage System and new Video Conference Infrastructure

  • Assists with the mounting, cabling, installation and maintenance of systems including, but not limited to: projectors, screens, flat panel monitors, control consoles, audio capture- distribution- and- reinforcement systems, audio conference systems, video conference systems

  • Assists with the use of classroom technologies including coordination and provision of lecture-capture services for classes, events and special assignments

  • Mentors back-up support staff and/or other AV technicians as necessary, to help develop their knowledge and troubleshooting/technical-issue-resolving skills

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other IT units and departments, and external vendors/contractors

  • Interacts, coordinates and communicates effectively with colleagues across Facilities and Campus Planning, as well as, staff in Special Events, Room Reservations, Building Design, Public Safety and other units

  • Collaborates with IT Asset Management personnel in managing the location, storage and salvaging of AV equipment; assists with annual Graduate Center inventory operations

  • Prepares effective written and graphic materials for the purposes of end-user training and system documentation

  • Performs other duties as necessary


  1. High school graduation or its equivalent and three years of full-time experience acquired within the last ten years, in the repair, maintenance and routine operation of various audio and visual equipment, and other equivalent electronic equipment (including portable public address systems, digital recorders, digital cameras); or

  2. Graduation from a recognized vocational or technical high school for radio and television mechanics or related trades and two years of full-time experience, acquired within the last ten years, as described in “1” above.

NOTE: Two years verifiable experience as a member of a high school audio-visual squad, or one year work-study experience in an approved Board of Education or College program which includes work with audio-visual or related electronic equipment may be substituted for six months experience described in “1” or “2” above.


A preferred candidate should have:

  • Three years of demonstrated hands on experience in supporting AV and conferencing technologies in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment

  • Working knowledge of current AV, audio, video and web conferencing technologies

  • Experience with the installation and support of AV systems hardware, software and technical infrastructure, including shielded twisted pair, audio and video cable termination

  • Experience with video conferencing systems and streaming technology

  • Working knowledge of principles of AV, collaboration and low-voltage technologies design, development, engineering, integration, implementation, performance criteria and analysis

  • CTS certification

  • Familiarity with PC hardware; Mac hardware a plus; familiarity with Windows Operating System (Windows 10) and Mac OS X are a plus

  • Strong written and verbal communication


New Hire Minimum* -$42,396/year

Incumbent Minimum -$47,906/year

  • This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment.
