For over 15 years, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) has been leading online education in New York. Reporting directly to the Senior System Administrator, the Network Security Engineer (IT Associate Level 1-3 provisional) will ensure the security, stability and integrity of in-house voice, data and wireless network services by planning, designing and developing local area networks (LANs), Wired Networks and Wireless Networks (WLANs) across the campus. In addition, the Network Security Engineer will participate with the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support and optimization of all network and security hardware, software and communication links. This successful candidate will also analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end user training where required. This position may require evening and/or weekend hours.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Assist in Design and deploy enterprise-class wireless networks, including access points, servers, routers, hubs, switches, firewalls and other hardware.

  • Assist in Design and installation of University LANs, WANs, and WLAN (wireless networks), including servers, routers, hubs, switches, UPSs, firewalls, and other hardware.

  • Oversee new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.

  • Configure networks to ensure their secure, smooth and reliable operation for fulfilling business objectives and processes.

  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot problem areas as needed.

  • Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software, and peripheral devices.

  • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.

  • Develop and document procedures for maintaining and troubleshooting LAN & WLAN systems and components.

  • Maintain operating systems and supporting software or applications associated with LAN & WLAN operations.

  • Setting up and managing IPsec, L2L and web SSL VPN on a Cisco platform

  • Managing Cisco wireless infrastructure and Cisco ISE captive portal

  • Utilize network monitoring, firewalls, NAC and IDS/IPS

  • Write and maintain information security policies. Document using network diagramming software (Visio)

  • Manage the implementation of circuits and data/voice connectivity with fiber and copper physical layer technologies

  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  2. An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus three years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position

  3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  4. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This job has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


  • Experience with Cisco Catalyst switch, Cisco Nexus System

  • Experience with Cisco IOS switching and configuration

  • Experience with assisting IP v4/v6 switches and routed VLAN’s

  • Experience with Palo Alto firewalls

  • Knowledge of ITIL concepts including service management and service delivery; experience working within the ITIL framework for incident, problem, change, or service request management

  • Ability to create and modify processes and effectively communicate them to managers, colleagues and users

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience with VMware and NetApp SAN a plus

  • Candidates with CCNA (or higher) certification a plus

  • Working knowledge of Windows 2008/2018/2016 and Linux servers (Ubuntu, CentOS)

  • Knowledge of configuring and upgrading the Cisco FlexPod components (Cisco Nexus switches, Cisco UCS servers, Fabric Interconnects, etc…)

  • Experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash scripts, or equivalent scripting languages to automate and integrate systems

  • Experience working with public clouds – e.g., Amazon Web Services, Azure, Rackspace or Digital Ocean

  • Demonstrated ability to articulate business needs and to translate these into technology solutions

  • Excellent analytical skills, good project management skills, commitment to high quality customer service

  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment.

  • Awareness of IT industry trends and changes affecting medium to large institutions.

  • A concern for accuracy, details, and quality.

Incumbent Min Level 1: $72,209.

Incumbent Min Level 2: $79,677.

Incumbent Min Level 3: $89,639.
