The Graduate Center Library seeks a Non-Teaching Adjunct Reference Librarian to work about 12 – 15 hours/week (up to 225 hours for the Fall semester). Hours are flexible, based on availability and need but will overlap with the in-person reference desk schedule (Mon – Thu 10am to 6pm). We cannot accommodate hours outside of the reference desk schedule. This is a temporary position with reevaluation at the end of the Fall semester.

Responsibilities include reference desk work with Springshare’s LibAnswers chat reference service. Additional projects may include writing and editing research guides and/or library blog posts, teaching graduate-level research workshops, creating instructional materials, and assisting with open pedagogy and/or open scholarship projects.

This position reports to the Head of Reference Librarian.


Bachelor's Degree required.


A preferred candidate should have:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited program.

  • Strong commitment to public service.

  • Expertise in a wide range of library databases.

  • Previous reference experience and experience with the LibAnswers chat service, along with a familiarity with CUNY are strongly preferred. Comfort with graduate level research questions, desktop troubleshooting, and a wide range of technologies including LibGuides, LibCal, LibAnswers, WordPress, Zotero, and GoogleDocs is desired.

  • Strong attention to details, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to learn quickly, work independently, meet deadlines, and apply critical thinking skills to library tools, systems, and problems.
