John Jay College of Criminal Justice (John Jay) seeks a collaborative and innovative academic leader to fill the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. A preeminent international leader in educating for justice, John Jay is one of 11 four-year colleges within the City University of New York (CUNY), a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and a designated minority institution committed to preparing students to serve the public interest as ethical leaders and engaged citizens. John Jay’s academic programs balance the natural and social sciences, humanities, and the arts with professional studies. John Jay’s academic departments offer undergraduate Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 31 majors and over 40 minors; master’s degrees in 14 fields of study; combined BA/MA programs; and three doctoral programs in conjunction with the Graduate Center of CUNY. The theme of justice is at the heart of each of John Jay’s programs. John Jay houses a number of research centers that explore boundaries in diverse disciplines ranging from terrorism, crime prevention, and law enforcement to human rights and ethical behavior. In the last six years, John Jay’s external research portfolio has more than doubled; John Jay now ranks third in scholarship and research funding within CUNY.
John Jay’s 1,100 full-time and adjunct faculty teach 12,900 undergraduates and 1,900 graduate students. The student body is the most diverse among CUNY’s senior colleges—more than 40 percent are Hispanic; 25 percent are African American; 12 percent are Asian; and 60 percent are female. John Jay also has more than 600 enrolled military veterans. Students learn directly from distinguished world-class faculty, including two Pulitzer Prize-winners, seven Distinguished Professors, three Presidential Scholars, and other widely honored experts in a variety of academic fields.
Reporting to John Jay’s dynamic new president whose top priority is enhancing student success, the Provost is the chief academic officer, responsible for ensuring academic excellence and promoting student and faculty success. The Provost oversees 28 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs, and offices of undergraduate and graduate studies, strategic initiatives, institutional effectiveness, advancement of research, along with all faculty development, services, and academic administrative operations. The Provost works closely with the President and members of her executive staff to advance the agenda of student success. The Provost will provide energetic, intellectual leadership to the academic community and will play a lead role in the development of academic vision and strategy for the College.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
John Jay seeks a Provost with a broad academic vision; a strong background in research, scholarship, and teaching; and a commitment to undergraduate, graduate, and online education. The Provost will be a passionate, accomplished scholar, strong leader, and visible advocate for academic quality, who understands the needs of John Jay’s students. The Provost will be committed to the vision of faculty as teacher/scholars; embrace interdisciplinary and internationalization; engage with faculty, students, and staff across a diverse set of academic pursuits; be committed to the open exchange of ideas across campus; and lead John Jay’s efforts to ensure student graduation and success. The Provost will have a doctorate or other earned terminal degree and a record of teaching and scholarship warranting appointment as a tenured full professor. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, yet decisively; a track record of promoting student success with first generation students and enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning; and respect for shared governance will be important for success in this role.
