GENERAL DUTIES

Supports research projects and activities in connection with CUNY programs

  • May assist faculty research groups by configuring and testing equipment, collecting and organizing data, and preparing documentation.

  • Performs direct research tasks under supervision.

  • May develop or utilize computer-based systems to collect and analyze data.

  • May assist in preparing reports of research findings.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

About the Position: CENTRO is looking for an Art Researcher who can develop art exhibits, and educational content. The Art Researcher’s main duties consist of developing a database of Puerto Rican artists, working with CENTRO art collections (mostly prints and photographs), and cataloging educational and scholarly works.

The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is a university-based research institute whose mission it is to produce, facilitate, and disseminate interdisciplinary research about the experiences of Puerto Ricans in the U.S. We collect, preserve and provide access to archival and library resources documenting the history and culture of Puerto Ricans. Assignments & Supervision: Work assignments may vary depending upon programmatic needs. Work under the supervision of the Centro’s Director of Arts and Culture, and may oversee the work of college assistants for specific projects. Work performance will take place onsite and any flexible schedule will follow established university regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research in the special collections and contributes to the conceptual development of a project by organizing/creating documentation of found materials.

  • Researches and obtains art and image permissions; requests images for exhibitions and/or publications;

  • Assist curator by conducting research, writing and other curatorial work related to acquisitions, exhibitions, publications and public presentations.

  • Build and organize data related to art and artifacts

  • Manage collections by assessing and cataloging artwork and items in collections

  • Research objects to document identification and authentication

  • Play an active role in the art community by publishing research and information in journals, catalogs, and books

  • Use diverse methods, resources, and teaching strategies to reach young and adult learners

  • Assists with creation of Centro presentation materials

  • Participate in development and administrative efforts

  • Analyze and summarize results for review with supervisor.

  • Participate in writing acquisition and exhibition proposals

  • Plan the presentation and installation of artwork and objects

  • May assist with organizing art collections; create labels and interpretive materials for artwork

  • Participate in staff meetings

  • Develop content that is engaging and grabs the attention of viewers

  • Perform other related tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience relevant to the research being performed.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Art or Art History background knowledge, specifically knowledge of Puerto Rican visual arts and artists from the diaspora

  • Work history relevant to identity issues, diasporic studies, Caribbean culture, and photography

  • Effective communication skills

  • Ability to handle multiple work projects simultaneously

  • Experience handling museum-quality artwork and or artifacts

  • Demonstrated art research skills

  • Community engagement experience and skills

  • The candidate should be a confident and versatile writer and communicator with a proactive attitude and a diligent work ethic.

  • Well-informed about the art market and in-depth knowledge of the collections and exhibitions they manage

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

COMPENSATION

PSC/CUNY contract salary range of $42,965 - $55,429 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
