GENERAL DUTIES

Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.

The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life.

The GC has established itself as a leader in the interdisciplinary study of inequality. In autumn 2016, the GC received a $2.5 million gift from James and Cathleen Stone to support research, teaching, and public programming related to inequality. To recognize this generous gift, the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) Center was renamed the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality. The Stone Center on Socio-Economic Equality was established in 2009 and houses four major activities: 1. It serves as the U.S. Office of LIS, the renowned data archive located in Luxembourg. 2. Its core faculty members – a mix of economists, political scientists, and sociologists – teach interdisciplinary courses, focused on or including various topics related to inequality. In addition to their regular course offerings, the Center faculty join forces each June to host a week-long intensive workshop on inequality research; so far, over 250 young scholars have completed the workshop. 3. It hosts three seminar series related to inequality and collaborates with GC Public Programs on 3-4 large public events each year. 4. Its faculty and affiliated students are actively engaged in research projects addressing diverse facets of socio-economic inequality.

The Stone Center seeks to hire a Research Associate (Postdoctoral Scholar) to work on research related to the high end of the wealth distribution in the United States, cross-nationally, or both. The appointment will be for two years, full-time, and will begin in fall 2019.

Stone Center Research Associates will produce empirical research, actively contributing to the growing national and international conversation on economic inequality and on feasible strategies, both public and private, aimed at furthering fair, effective, and efficient policy and institutional reforms.

This position will report to a designated Stone Center Senior Scholar.

Option for Clinical Year: In the second year, the Research Associate will have the option of relocating to a clinical placement, i.e., to a different organization focused on applied policy work. The clinical placement could be in New York City, in Washington D.C., or elsewhere as appropriate. During the clinical year, the Research Associate will continue to be employed by (paid by) and linked to, the Stone Center and would be required to contribute to the Stone Center. Contributions will include, but are not limited to, adding a paper to the Stone Center Working Paper series, authoring blog posts or Research Briefs for the Stone Center website, delivering one or more lectures or seminars hosted by the Stone Center, and/or assisting with grant-writing/fundraising for the Stone Center.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts his/her own research with support from senior scholars/mentors in the Stone Center.

  • Collaborates with senior scholars affiliated with the Stone Center.

  • Contributes to public learning by giving lectures in academic and applied settings, organizing public programs, developing curricula and informational materials, writing accessible policy and research briefs aimed at diverse audiences, engaging in professional-quality social media (e.g., blogs and podcasts), and building relations with key stakeholders and other scholars in the field, etc.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A preferred candidate should have:

  • Ph.D. degree in economics, statistics or related discipline. (Applicants must have completed their PhD – or demonstrate that they will do so – by the position start date. Ph.D. must have been conferred no more than seven (7) years prior to the application date.)

  • Existing research portfolio that demonstrates interest in, and experience with empirical, methodological, or theoretical scholarship on the high end of the wealth distribution.

  • High level of technical skills, expertise in a range of quantitative methods, and experience with complex data sets.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

COMPENSATION

Salary of $87,000/year; plus an allowance for research-related expenditures. This position has been generously funded by the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation.
