CUNY Research Compliance Specialist in New York, New York


Baruch invites applications for a Research Compliance Specialist who will work in the Research Compliance and Outreach (RCO) office to assure the protection of the rights and welfare of all research subjects at Baruch College. This position reports to the Director of Research Compliance and Outreach.

The duties and responsibilities of this position will include, but not limited to:

  • Acts as the organizational resource for all human subjects’ research compliance and protection issues.

  • Pre-reviews HRPP protocols to ensure compliance with Federal regulations, and CUNY specific policies and procedures.

  • Responds to inquiries regarding research studies involving human subjects.

  • Conducts human subject research determinations and exempt reviews.

  • Assists in planning and conducting training sessions (including use of IRB software) for researchers, IRB members, and appropriate campus staff.

  • Maintains communications and provide support to investigators throughout the review process.

  • Sends protocols to be reviewed via expedited/full board reviews to appropriate IRB members; prepares and sends approval materials.

  • Maintains up-to-date IRB files, prepares newsletters and college reports, and maintains and updates content on the HRPP website.

  • Participates in continuing education and professional development activities.

  • Provides administrative support for office functions and completes special projects and assignments as needed; assists with planning and arrangements for meetings, workshops, and IRB events.

  • Attends HRPP meetings (on- and off-campus).


Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required. Master’s degree is preferred.

The preferred candidate will have the following knowledge, experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles of ethical conduct of research with human subjects.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal regulations (OHRP, NIH, FDA, USDA, and other government agencies) related to human research subjects protection.

  • Advanced skills in MS Word and intermediate skills in database programs, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

  • At least four years of professional experience working in a research environment such as an Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), grants, or technology transfer setting performing administrative and technical duties required.

  • Certification in clinical research, IRB, or healthcare compliance, including but not limited to CCRA, CCRC, ACRP-CP, or CIP, or willingness to secure certification within one year of hire.

  • Superior written and oral communications skills.

  • Strong analytical, time management, and multi-tasking skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.

  • Ability to follow through on assignments with minimal direction, independently prioritize work, and work under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of researchers and other diverse individuals.


Coordinates compliance activities related to College or Unit research programs.

  • Ensures that campus research programs comply with federal regulations, state laws, and CUNY policies and procedures

  • Provides administrative support to committees and review boards overseeing research compliance

  • Conducts outreach and education efforts to foster a culture of regulatory compliance

  • Organizes and manages technology applications used to facilitate compliance and reporting

  • Collects data and reports on compliance activities and outcomes

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
