POSITION DETAILS

The Office of Research, Evaluation, and Program Support (REPS) was established to provide evaluation services and data management support to CUNY programs. Using rigorous qualitative and quantitative social science research methods to assess program performance, REPS provides the process and outcome evaluation findings needed to help programs develop, improve, and ultimately reach key goals. REPS also supports programs by providing the reporting tools and data management essential to assessing program operations and effectiveness.

As part of the REPS team, the Research Specialist for the CUNY Tutor Corps Program will develop and implement an evaluation agenda for select projects. The CUNY Tutor Corps in Math and Computer Science brings students from CUNY colleges into middle and high school classrooms, helping them become highly effective tutors and teaching assistants in the mathematics and computer science classrooms. Reporting to the REPS Director for Research and Development, the Research Specialist for Tutor Corps will prepare datasets and conduct statistical analysis on equity-focused educational initiatives, manage all phases of evaluation projects, manage program data, and lead evaluation report writing and dissemination. In addition, the Research Specialist will provide critical support to the Tutor Corps Program Director and staff by collecting, coding, and organizing program data sets, developing evaluation reports, and ensuring data quality and completeness.

Other key responsibilities include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Coordinate the administration, collection, and analysis of data as required for program review.

  • Design and conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses and evaluation plans utilizing a variety of data sets and databases to evaluate the program and produce effective data visualizations.

  • Create and manipulate large, complex datasets from multiple sources.

  • Document procedures and analyses.

  • Coordinate administration, collection, and analysis of data as required for program review.

  • Respond to ad hoc requests in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Conduct literature reviews that synthesize the state of research and policy in relevant project areas.

  • Lead and participate on project teams by defining the scope of work and organizing the workflow of team members.

  • Coordinate projects and project teams effectively and efficiently to deliver high-quality, actionable data and evaluation to project partners on time.

  • Liaise with program partners to engage them in the project, keep them apprised of progress and issues that arise, and discuss results.

  • Communicate evaluation findings in written reports, briefs, data visualizations, and presentations for a variety of audiences.

  • Collaborate with Data Management and Analytics staff to maintain project-related data sources.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required. OTHER

  • Four years’ experience analyzing, querying, manipulating, and extracting data from large databases using SQL in an applied research or educational setting.

  • Advanced degree in education, the social sciences, or a directly related discipline is strongly preferred, and may substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

  • Formal training in research and evaluation methods with a strong understanding of statistical concepts.

  • Experience employing qualitative and quasi-experimental quantitative research methods in program evaluation (i.e. propensity score matching, linear regression, or logistic regression).

  • Experience translating research findings into deliverables for diverse types of audiences.

  • Familiarity with matching data sets and manipulating large amounts of data from multiple sources.

  • Proficiency using statistical software (SPSS syntax, STATA, R, or SAS) to analyze and manipulate large data sets with complex structures, plus experience using data visualization tools (Tableau).

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office products, as well as proficiency using administrative, financial or academic programs, systems or databases.

  • Keen interest in issues of access to and success in postsecondary education.

  • Detail oriented and accurate with strong analytical, research, evaluation, and writing skills.

  • Proactive and flexible with strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills to develop and execute work plans, prioritize work, manage multiple evaluation or research projects and meet deadlines.

  • Compiles, maintains, and analyzes institutional data in various formats

  • Produces reports and metrics based on department's needs; responds to time-critical ad-hoc requests

  • Loads, extracts, edits, and evaluates data for reporting and analytics

  • Maintains selected databases and document libraries, updating and ensuring data quality and accuracy

  • May participate in internal and external surveys as needed

  • May consult with others in designing methodology for research projects
