POSITION DETAILS

The Science Writer will report to the Communications Publications Editorial Manager at The City College of New York. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Science Writer’s duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the preparation of written material on a variety of topics such as students, alumni,

faculty, campus facilities, academic programs, research and/or events.

  • Actively engage in all aspects of the writing process with close attention to detail—including

research, writing, proofreading and editing.

  • Research and assist in writing news releases, brochures, profiles, announcements, e-news

stories and other materials as needed.

  • Create material to be used in a number of formats such as print, websites, and

presentations.

  • Craft messages for donors and potential donors at every stage of the philanthropy

experience: cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.

  • Translate complex scientific information into clear, vibrant lay language.

  • Prepare proposals and stewardship reports on scientific research; descriptions of giving

opportunities; and other fundraising-related correspondence.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience with media relations and ability to pitch to external media.

  • Specialize in engaging scientific communities; have a strong ability to analyze scientific data; evaluate research outcomes and applications, and able to communicate to both lay and scientific readers.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
