The School of Labor and Urban Studies at The City University of New York seeks a Senior Academic Advisor to provide integral advisement and support to working adult undergraduate and graduate students navigating their unique academic careers from admission through graduation. The Senior Academic Advisor will work with an assigned caseload of students in degree and certificate programs and provide individualized outreach, needs assessment, academic guidance, timely feedback and appropriate referrals to school and community support services and resources to navigate students’ academic progress, enhance their professional development, and facilitate their academic success. Reporting to the Director of Student and Community Affairs, the Senior Academic Advisor will advise assigned Urban Academy students to support retention, ensure a seamless transition to the Urban and Community Studies bachelor’s degree programs, and aid degree completion.

In addition to the job summary above and the CUNY Title Overview below, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Advise students about prerequisites, curriculum and graduation requirements, college policies and support services.

  • Monitor students’ academic performance based on University and College Wide Retention Performance Indicators.

  • Evaluate, document, and report on student academic participation, performance and progress; follow-up on early alert reports; develop interventions related to student academic status and success.

  • Assist with departmental course planning and scheduling, and implementing action plans to achieve student-defined success.

  • Perform preliminary graduation audits for degree and certificate applicants; verify completion of all requirements to determine degree/certificate eligibility.

  • Collaborate and coordinate with faculty and staff across various SLU and University offices to support registration activities, address issues regarding curricular requirements, and resolve issues with CUNYfirst and DegreeWorks.

  • Develop and conduct orientation programs, student workshops, and other activities and events.

  • Report on advisement activities and outcomes and create strategies to improve advisement services.

  • Regularly communicate with students via multiple platforms (zoom, phone, in-person meetings, walk-in services), respond to all student text/calls/emails within two (2) business days, and maintain a log of all advisement outreach activities for management review and reporting.

  • Some evening and weekend work required.

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required


  • Advanced degree in Higher Education or a directly related discipline strongly preferred.

  • Four years of progressively responsible work experience in student academic advising and career advising of adult students, including international experience and cross-cultural sensitivity.

  • Broad knowledge of NACADA, NASPA and other national advising organizations and evidence of professional engagement within the advising field, plus relevant advising program data analysis, assessment and evaluation methods.

  • Detail oriented and accurate with exceptional critical analysis, research and evaluation skills.

  • Pro-active, flexible and collaborative work style with strong interpersonal communication, presentation relationship building and group facilitation skills to communicate and work effectively with multiple groups of diverse students, members of the school community and external constituents.

  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills with ability to devise and execute work plans, prioritize work, manage a large and varied workload, follow up and complete assignments within time and resource constraints.

  • Computer proficiency using academic, administrative and financial programs, systems or databases, including Excel, Access or other data management/reporting software; virtual meeting/conferencing, collaboration, presentation, social media and digital outreach tools.


Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population.

  • Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students

  • Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses

  • Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements

  • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits

  • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines

  • Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling

  • Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed

  • May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling

  • May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
