The Senior Vice President is a member of senior executive management in a College or Unit and serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet. As a high-level executive, they have broad responsibility for one or more major divisions. They incorporate innovative practices into plans and strategies and collaborates with other College and University executives, and outside organizations as needed, to develop appropriate policy and acquire resources. They are a dynamic leader of an executive team responsible for personnel, budget and operations.
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Reporting to the President, the Senior Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer (COO) is one of the top four management positions at City College of New York. The COO is responsible for developing and implementing campus operational activities and administrative policies and procedures consistent with the University’s Offices of the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees; Implementing best practices and business process redesign to enhance the administrative and fiscal services of the College working corroboratively with Vice Presidents and other executive staffs, as well as the College’s external constituents. This position will manage and coordinate operations including facilities, information technology, and financial management and will strategize with the President, Provost, and Vice President, Office of Institutional Advancement and Communications and External Relations (Executive Leadership Group). The COO will oversee the areas of the Vice President of Finance and Administration and Vice President of Operations & Chief Information Officer. The COO will understand and respond to the operational needs of the campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Designs, establishes and maintains organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of nonacademic staff.
Responsible for financial matters including the construction of forward-looking strategic budgets and budget processes to meet college priorities.
Provides integrated policy analysis and strategic consultation to the President and senior administration on major issues affecting the College, advises the President and senior leadership on best ways to position the institution with civic and business leadership, alumni, and regional elected representatives on issues that have a direct, strategic impact on the core initiatives and on problem resolution.
Prepares and/or contributes to the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, as appropriate.
Oversight of the audit and cash transactions of all entities of the college including the Foundation for City College and The City College Center for the Arts (both traditional philanthropy); Student Services Corporation and Auxiliary Enterprise Corporation
Interacts with college, industry, government, and community officials and stakeholders in the representation and development of strategic program initiatives.
Provide strategic analysis of external developments that may provide opportunities or challenges to the college.
Coordinates special projects on behalf of the President, frequently involving senior officers of the College.
As a part of the College's leadership team is available to respond to media requests as directed by the VP of Institutional Advancement and Communications.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.
The successful candidate will have the capacity to provide leadership at the Institutional level and possess a sense of service to the College's diverse constituencies, both Internal and external. An understanding of the whole enterprise must be combined with a practical project orientation.
An advanced degree in Business Administration or any related field with 10 or more years of proven and progressively responsible experience in management, finance, and/or operations experience at a senior staff level; thorough understanding of working in an urban environment; Impeccable Integrity; proven or demonstrated commitment to diversity; demonstrated ability to Identify problems.
Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure, and operations of a major public college or university and knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures, comprehensive knowledge of accounting, financial reporting, and analysis and knowledge and understanding of institutional policies and procedures and the regulatory environment within which they operate.
Strategic planning skills including the management of a planning process and the ability to connect the strategic development and allocation of resources to planning goals.
Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and management skills; Experience helping senior management to develop and implement a strategically driven budget process with a special focus on diversifying revenue streams and return on investment based on future opportunities.
Understanding of internal control concepts and the implementation of internal control systems in a complex business environment and capacity to learn and understand the strategic needs of the community in the areas of public education and economic development.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, community leadership, and funding agencies and ability to foster a cooperative work environment and possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment.
