POSITION DETAILS

The Provost, as chief academic officer of the institution, is responsible for all academic, research, and creative work of the College and provides campus leadership to carry out the strategic vision as a national model epitomizing academic excellence and social mobility. S/he will promote a comprehensive and collaborative academic vision across three schools: the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences and the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. Working with senior leadership of the College, the Provost will integrate academic priorities into all major campus planning and decision-making, including student services, facilities planning, information technology, resource allocation, and fundraising. Also, within the Provost’s responsibilities are the Offices of Continuing and Professional Studies, Sponsored Programs and Research, Assessment, Accreditation and Institutional Effectiveness, the Honors Program, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Tools for Clear Speech, the Student Academic Consulting Center, Adjunct Faculty Services, the Writing Center, and the Bernard Schwartz Communications Institute.

The Provost reports to the President, serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet and works in close collaboration with other senior administrators, faculty, students and staff of the College and external constituencies. The Provost serves as the College’s liaison to the Office of Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost of the City University of New York (CUNY). The Provost provides regular reports to the President and is responsible for carrying out his vision for the institution.

Specific duties of the Provost include:

  • Exercising strong academic administrative leadership with primary responsibility to plan, develop, and administer all aspects of the college’s programs, activities, personnel, and budget in the instructional and academic support areas;

  • Providing leadership in maintaining the highest academic standards and working closely with academic deans, program directors, faculty, staff and student leaders to provide quality educational programs and services consistent with the college’s mission;

  • Representing the college with appropriate external agencies and organizations regarding academic and research programs, and representing the college externally with the city, state, and federal agencies as appropriate.

  • Provides leadership in developing and articulating an academic vision and establishing a strategic plan within a complex educational institution;

  • Implements strong financial and administrative management strategies to aid the College as well as individual schools in making strategic resource allocation decisions;

  • Fosters excellence in teaching, scholarship, creative activity, and professional services;

  • Serve as a strong advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration in research, scholarship, and academic programming.

  • Engage all constituencies in collegial discourse in support of the College’s mission.

  • Ensures commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity in education and employment;

  • Contributes to the overall success of the College by performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate for the position of Provost will have an earned doctorate and evidence of scholarly achievement at a senior level appropriate for the chief academic officer of the College. S/he will have at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in academic higher education; experience in a large public institution highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of success in building academic programs, recruiting faculty, developing teaching and scholarship, fundraising and translating program goals into successful operating plans with realistic budgets and effective staff management, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students.

To fulfill these responsibilities and to lead effectively, the Provost should be both academically accomplished and administratively experienced, and be a person of the highest integrity and compassion. Yet, first and foremost, the Provost should be a scholar-educator, setting high, yet attainable standards for pedagogy and scholarship, fostering curricular development and innovation, and empowering faculty and deans to go beyond the dissemination of knowledge to the creation, coalescing, application and use of new knowledge.

An ideal candidate should demonstrate a sustained record of experience and achievement in higher education administration, including evidence of the following:

  • Significant, successful leadership in an academic institution preferably in a position at or above the level of dean;

  • Energetic, well-organized, and detailed-oriented with a strong acumen in execution and implementation

  • Familiarity with academic information technology issues and opportunities;

  • Commitment to cultivating an institutional environment promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion;

  • Well informed about the challenges and opportunities in serving the needs of a racially, ethnically, and economically diverse student body;

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work sensitively with diverse constituencies;
