The Student Life Specialist (Assistant Director of New Student & Family Programs) reports to the head of the department and will be responsible for providing new incoming students with a framework for mapping goals and expectations that prepare them for successful completion of their degree objectives. Additionally, the Assistant Director provides information about the offices and services that assist and support student success and works with students to resolve college transition concerns. Moreover, the Assistant Director will assist in identifying opportunities for parent/families of new incoming students to become engaged with Baruch College. Primary responsibilities of this position include assisting the unit head in planning, developing, and implementing new student program initiatives; performing administrative, timekeeping, and budget tasks; selecting, training, and supervising peer mentors for the First Year and Transfer Seminars; and assisting with Week of Welcome activities, Student Convocation, parent/family newsletter and activities, leadership training, transfer student adjustment, and Commencement.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule and mentor peer mentors for First Year and Transfer Seminars and student support staff

  • Provide support to First Year and Transfer Seminars through room assignments, instruction, budget management, and other personnel matters that may arise

  • Assist in the collection and analysis of departmental assessment and student satisfaction data

  • Maintain records for tracking budget expenditures and managing student staff time sheets

  • Provide assistance and referrals to students at risk and those facing barriers in their transition to college. Be knowledgeable of on-campus support services available to students.

  • Provide outreach and assistance to parents/families to engage them in campus activities

  • Promote the services of the office at student orientation, resource fairs, and other recruitment events

  • Serve on departmental and divisional committees and taskforces

  • Assist with Week of Welcome, Student Convocation, Commencement and leadership training

  • Be available and flexible to work some late evening and weekend hours


  • Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years’ related experience required

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, managerial, and administrative skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex environment

  • Strong computer skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Photoshop

  • Be knowledgeable of on-campus support services available to students

  • Flexible to work nights and weekends


  • Master’s degree preferred

  • Experience training in a college setting

  • Familiarity with assessment and best practices in retention and student development theory and practice


  • Develops and implements programming, services, and learning opportunities for students, promoting the personal development of a diverse student population.

  • Administers one or more student affairs programs, providing program management, assistance with policy development, supervision and training of all professional and support staff, budget monitoring, and report preparation

  • Serves as a resource to student groups and/or populations as a consultant and advocate for their concerns

  • Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact

  • Produces workshops and materials to support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary $51,126 to $58,555; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
