POSITION DETAILS

The Counseling Center at BMCC helps students realize their educational, career and personal goals. The Center is staffed with experienced mental health practitioners, who not only work toward reducing the interference of everyday stress on goals and academic success, but who do so with a respect for multicultural issues. The Counseling Center is devoted to helping students succeed.

The Academic Notice Program uses a strengths-based, holistic student approach to support students who have fallen below the academic requirements to remain in good academic standing at BMCC. The Program is a cohort specific program with the goal of assisting students to regain good academic standing through a growth mindset lens. We seek an individual invested in equity and inclusiveness, who has experience with program development and knowledge of/ sensitivity to the needs of diverse student populations.

The Student Psychological Counselor and Coordinator of Academic Notice Program will report to the Director of the Counseling Center and perform the following duties with an emphasis on the mental health and academic wellbeing of students:

  • Individual counseling sessions which focus on a range of topics pertaining to the mental health of college students as it pertains to their academic standing.

  • Coordinate the cohort program (for students on Academic Notice) with the goal of connecting students who are facing academic challenges to appropriate services to regain good academic standing.

  • Develop and conduct workshops and seminars for social and academic issues targeting college students who are not in good academic standing.

  • Provide psychological crisis intervention as needed.

  • Participate in campus-wide retention and persistence outreach and activities with specific focus on students who are not in good academic standing.

  • Participate in college wide events such as orientation, outreach, retention initiatives, and psycho-educational workshops with a focus on students who are on Academic Notice.

  • Participate in professional development to stay up to date with current issues.

  • Aid major college-wide events such as commencement, orientation, registration, and honors convocation.

  • Serve as a consultant to campus colleagues for students’ academic and behavioral cases.

  • Work location of assignments will vary depending upon the needs of the department.

Some evening hours are required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs is preferred or a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling is required.

A New York State License as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling) is also required.

Experience:

Five+ years of related experience in social work, psychology, or mental health counseling. To meet the supervised experience requirement as a licensed Mental Health Counselor, you must have completed at least 3,000 clock hours providing Mental Health Counseling. The supervised experience must be obtained after completion of the master’s degree program required for licensure.

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Experience in a college or university counseling setting.

  • Experience and understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of a multi-ethnic campus community.

  • Experience in creating non-traditional spaces for therapeutic interventions for students.

  • Experience and interest in working with non-traditional college students and historically underserved communities.

  • Experience providing academic counseling or support services to students.

  • Experience with bilingual student populations.

  • Experience with short-term, brief, and/or solution-focused interventions.

  • Possess superior interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and on a team and collaborate with multiple offices and constituencies on new programs.

  • Be a dynamic individual who can provide courteous and accurate customer service to all students, visitors and the campus community.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.

$79,188 - $90,375*

*Salary commensurate with education and experience.
