Located in the heart of Harlem, the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) is dedicated to providing cutting edge graduate degree programs and to designing, implementing and evaluating public health initiatives that promote population health and social justice. CUNY SPH currently seeks to hire a Student Psychological Counselor in the Student Affairs division.

Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Alumni Relations, the Student Psychological Counselor will support the mental health and wellness needs of our students enrolled in our on-campus and on-line programs and will also develop and monitor health-related programming, outreach activities and communications to support a diverse population of adult students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling services to CUNY SPH students, make appropriate referrals and monitor follow-up.

  • Plan and conduct student services and needs assessments.

  • Consult with faculty and staff with the goal of helping to assess emergent student crisis and to provide guidance on how to identify and engage students in distress.

  • Consult and collaborate with Student Affairs staff with the goal of helping students access and utilize the services available to them through the Office of Student Services, as well as to plan outreach and support programs.

  • Participate in recommending improvements that will impact the effectiveness of Student Services.

  • May prepare and present outreach initiatives and educational workshops.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree and six years’ professional experience required.

A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs


A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling and a New York State license as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling).

The preferred candidate will have:

  • NYS Mental Health Counselor License.

  • Experience working with adults (particularly those in life and/or career transitions).

  • Familiarity with mental health and social services resources in the New York City area.

  • Experience using electronic or online systems and counseling online populations such as students.

  • Experience working with a diverse adult student population in a higher education environment.


Provides student counseling services as a member of a team.

  • Provides psychological counseling to individuals and groups of students

  • Performs crisis intervention for emergency situations

  • Performs intake and assessment for personal counseling services

  • Consults with instructional and administrative staff regarding student mental health issues; may prepare and present outreach initiatives and workshops

  • Participates in recommending improvements that will impact the counseling center's effectiveness

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
