POSITION DETAILS

CUNY Central Office of Academic Affairs is seeking a highly organized and detail oriented senior leader to serve as University Assistant Dean for Student Success Initiatives and Deputy to the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Academic Affairs. Key responsibilities will be to ensure the successful oversight and operations of the wide-range of student success programs that serve nearly 40,000 students annually with a $110m budget, including Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP), Accelerate Complete and Engage (ACE), CUNY Start/Math Start; programs serving public assistance recipients, literacy and language immersion students, and foster care youth. The Assistant Dean for Student Success Initiatives and Deputy to the AVC will provide senior level administration oversight, staff management, communication needs and reporting, external partnership development and strategic planning including support of key initiatives.

The University Assistant Dean will be a key member of the senior leadership team and will have excellent project management skills, and superior interpersonal skills to develop trusting internal and external relationships with unit staff, leadership and high-level internal and external stakeholders. The position requires a creative thinker with experience in program management, data evaluation, communication and experience with managing or supporting multiple programs. In addition, the successful candidate will exercise significant independent judgement who will also represent the AVC and the unit in external meetings and will be a part of a team that will be responsible to implement plans to achieve the goals and objectives of CUNY’s Academic Affairs’ academic momentum campaign aimed at increasing undergraduate completion rates.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the AVC to provide administrative and fiscal oversight of large-scale CUNY student success programs and OAA initiatives focused on access and completion to ensure goals are met in a timely manner.

  • Serve as the AVC’s Deputy and Chief of Staff managing communications within and across the AVC’s portfolio (117 Central Office staff) and with internal and external partners and other key stakeholders including public and private funders and policymakers.

  • Oversee CUNY programs serving public assistance recipients funded by the City of New York (serving more than 3k students across 18 colleges).

  • Lead and manage policy development/implementation and strategic planning across programs within the AVC’s portfolio.

  • Prepare and edit key communications for the AVC including reports, briefings, presentations, correspondence and confidential material for AVC.

  • Manage implementation and project plans for programs within the AVC’s portfolio to assure timely execution of deliverables to internal/external partners.

  • Support the AVC in evaluating key leadership staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s/professional degree preferred.

  • Experience in higher education, public, private and/or nonprofit sector roles with progressively increasing levels of responsibility.

  • Significant expertise in developing and implementing strategic plans in complex environment, especially in higher education settings.

  • Strong skills in change management initiatives including organizations design, new program development and strategic growth.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively engage multiple audiences.

  • Knowledge of public higher education policy issues, trends and understanding access and equity issues.

  • Ability to think strategically, problem-solve, and develop programs and plans to achieve organizational goals.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding and complex work environment.

  • Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout NYC and periodic national travel.
