Reporting to the Director of College Discovery, the Academic Program Specialist will assist with the oversight of the day- to-day operations of the Academic Support Center, and in addition to the Overview duties the position will be responsible for the following:

  • Implements the delivery of a wide range of services for the student population in the College Discovery Program.

  • Supports the hiring, training, and supervision of tutors assigned to the Center;

  • Administers all aspects of tutoring assignments, including maintaining the active tutoring schedule each semester;

  • Collects, reviews, and approves tutor timesheets. Interfaces with payroll to ensure accuracy or reporting;

  • Compiles and monitors College Discovery student information in the Starfish early alert and student tracking system;

  • With the Director of the Office of General Education and Student Learning Outcomes, designs on-line student surveys for tutors and the counseling staff in the program;

  • Coordinates efforts of faculty, staff and other service providers to monitor and assess utilization, student progress, and program effectiveness;

  • Collaborates with College advisers and counselors to identify and administer intensive academic support assessments and interventions for probation and at-risk students;

  • Acts as student advocate, and provides day-to-day problem solving as necessary on student needs and issues.

  • With the Director, develops and monitors temporary services (Supplemental Instruction) budget;

  • Prepares budget proposal for planned academic support services for the academic year;

  • Participates in the coordination of assessments and analysis of student data; recommends methods and procedures to improve outcomes;

  • Serves as the college’s representative on OSP’s Council of Seek and College Discovery Tutoring/Academic Support Coordinators;

  • Assists the director and the counseling team with the preparation of program assessment reports for the Office of Special Programs (OSP);

  • Serves as primary liaison between college offices and departments (e.g. CETL) on matters relating to student services;

  • Serves as the primary contact for students and faculty regarding center policies and procedures.


Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.


  • Significant experience in a tutorial setting and conducting academic support programs and workshops preferred. Experience working with a diverse student population and strong interpersonal and organizational skills are also preferred.

  • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft’s integrated application and Starfish students tracking system .

  • Experience in a college or university setting.

  • Experience working with special programs students (such as CD, SEEK, EOP & HEOP).

  • Excellent skills in written and oral communication.

  • Experience working with students from diverse socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic background.

  • Ability and willingness to stay current with professional practices.


Participates in the daily coordination of academic and administrative activities of a College's specialized academic program under management direction.

  • Supports program development, student service delivery, outcome evaluation and instructor/student recruitment, enrollment, and retention.

  • Recommends, implements and evaluates strategies to expand program offerings

  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management

  • Develops and maintains relationships with various College offices to improve student and faculty services

  • Serves as resource expert regarding program policies and procedures

  • Oversees office recordkeeping; manages updates of program web and print materials

  • May supervise office operations and/or department budget

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
