Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks an entrepreneurial and student-centered professional to lead the college’s Academic Support programming. Reporting to the Associate Provost for Innovation and Student Success, the Director of Academic Support will be responsible for designing and delivering comprehensive academic support to students College-wide. Queens College is a premier higher education institution in New York City. Our 20,000 highly diverse undergraduate and graduate students participate in our liberal arts, science, and pre-professional programs delivered by a faculty and staff dedicated to student success.

The Director of Academic Support will oversee academic support services at the QC Learning Commons, including the recently redesigned Writing Center, STEM Support Center, Interdisciplinary Learning Space, Language Lab, and other tutoring and student support resources for students. These resources, critical for student success, take a student-centered approach for supporting students academically. The Director will embrace the QC Learning Common’s vision of supporting and developing stronger and more confident students grounded on best practices and research on student success, in the context of a minority serving institution whose mission is to prepare our highly diverse students to become leading citizens in an increasingly global society.


Working in partnership with faculty, staff, students, and the College’s administration, the Director of Academic Support will:

-Design and execute the re-engineering of service and instructional models for the QC Learning Commons (tutoring, workshop development, peer support, and other academic support programming initiatives) and academic immersion programs (including the development and implementation of co-requisite courses) and the development of academic support programming for gateway courses in English, Math and other popular, in-demand college Majors.

-Develop and implement short-term and long-term plans for student support, tutoring, and peer support, with the aim of enhancing academic momentum, incorporating robust evaluation plans.

-Oversee the management, development, and assessment of all tutoring and academic peer support units at the college, within and across disciplines, and produce evaluative reports assessing the effectiveness of these initiatives.

-Supervise the directors and/or coordinators of the Writing Center, STEM Support Center, Interdisciplinary Learning Space, Language Lab, and other programming under Academic Support.

-Manage the budgets and oversee the personnel of the Academic Support Center.

-Liaise with academic departments and other, College-wide student support departments and secure buy-in for academic support initiatives.

-Collaborate with non-academic departments, including the Center for Teaching and Learning, Writing Across the Curriculum, and First-Year Experience, and Academic department programming, such as First Year Writing, in order to engage faculty in the improvement of student support programming.

-Create pipelines with other QC and CUNY units, including Macaulay, Transfer Honors, First-Year Experience, and serving all students, including international students, graduate students, and transfer students.

-Serve as a judicious steward of resources.


Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.


-Advanced degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Academic Support, and/or other related academic support related discipline.

-Experience managing a multi-faceted, fast-paced, time-sensitive, and demanding student-focused operation.

-Experience teaching undergraduates, particularly gateway courses for new students, such as composition or other general education requirements.

-Exceptional verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work and interact effectively, collaboratively, and cooperatively with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.

-Experience with student success management software, such as EAB Navigate, Starfish, or related software.

-Advanced knowledge of database and predictive analytic software, such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS, RStudio, Azure-ML, Tableau, and/or Atlas.Ti a plus.

-Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to student-centered models of higher education.

-Extensive experience using digital tools for teaching, learning, and tutoring.


Directs curriculum development and operations of a learning resource center.

  • Designs, implements and monitors a comprehensive student support program based on targeted academic resources such as tutoring, remedial and/or other related support services

  • Administers all curricular, administrative, and financial aspects of the center; oversees design and delivery of various programs sponsored by the center

  • Performs outcomes assessment and creates strategic plan to further develop center offerings

  • Ensures ongoing faculty and staff development to support high quality student services delivery; promotes best practices in field

  • Manages annual budget; develops proposals and other initiatives for expanded center funding

  • Cultivates and maintains strategic partnerships; serves as primary liaison to faculty and administrators to plan and execute center activities

  • Manages professional, instructional and clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
