Reporting to the SEEK/Counseling Director, the Academic Student Support Specialist will be responsible for providing educational support, academic advisement, and assistance to students in the Percy Ellis Sutton/ Search for Education Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) Program.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide consultation services to instructional and administrative staff regarding students with personal and academic difficulties.

  • Conduct student workshops on academic probation, study skills, test-taking strategies, time management, career options, and success and motivation; and lead Freshmen Orientation Seminars.

  • Provide advisement to all levels of students and assist students in setting goals and priorities for success.

  • Participate in collaborative outreach efforts for students experiencing academic and personal difficulties, in conjunction with administrators, faculty, and student groups.

  • Provide information regarding Queens College policies, procedures, requirements and major offerings.

  • Collaborate with faculty, staff and administrators on programs to improve student retention.

  • Participate in SEEK Program college committees, including, but not limited to, providing one-on-one and group college advisement and coordinating classroom presentations and student workshops.

  • Refer students to appropriate services on and off campus.


A Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) and two years’ related experience.

Note: this is not a mental health counselor/practitioner position and is not responsible for providing psychological counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NYS license in counseling/social work or related discipline.

  • At least two years’ experience in a Higher Ed Counseling environment.

  • Experience working with inner city students from diverse socioeconomic, racial and ethnic background, non-traditional/underrepresented students in higher education settings.

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends on flexible schedule.

  • Willingness to travel within the five boroughs/ nationally and host day and evenings events, periodically.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with multiple priorities and deadlines and as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to meet students’ needs; demonstrate organization skills; detail-oriented and ability to multi-task.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office Products, such as Word, Excel and Power Point.

  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft/Oracle information systems in a higher education or government environment.

  • Excellent written, verbal, analytical and interpersonal communication skills.


Provides educational programs, academic advice, and assistance to SEEK students. SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) is a higher education opportunity program established at the senior CUNY colleges to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college.

  • Provides advice to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed

  • Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities

  • Develops academic interventions related to student academic status and success

  • Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection

  • Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming

  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Higher Education Assistant




Salary Range: $71,000 - $73,000

Funding for the position is for a year with a possibility of continuance if funding is available.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 -- City of New York employees and employees of participating employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted.
