CUNY Assistant Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness & Strategic Planning: York College/CUNY in Queens, New York
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Institutional Effectiveness & Strategic Planning at York College will oversee the Offices of Institutional Effectiveness & Strategic Planning and Institutional Research, and will have overall administrative responsibility for matters related to institutional research, external accreditation (both institutional and program), academic program assessment and assessment of student learning, strategic planning, and institutional effectiveness. The AVP will be a lead collaborator in the preparation of all external accreditation documents and the College’s annual Performance Management Report to the central office of The City University New York (CUNY).
The AVP is responsible for a broad range of research and reporting activities, including responsibility for routine and ad hoc data collection, data analysis, and data reporting for both internal and external audiences and providing useable management information to key constituents by delivering evidence for data informed planning, decision-making and programmatic formulation. The successful candidate will have a long-term strategic focus that contributes to the overall achievement of the College’s stated priorities and who is expert in the broader guidelines in higher education that lead to meeting all standards.
In this role, the AVP also collaborates with other offices and programs on data management and data integrity, as well as efforts to educate the York community on effective use of administrative and assessment data.
The Assistant Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness & Strategic Planning will be integral to York’s commitment to excellence, accountability, and continuous quality improvement by ensuring that all academic and research programs, student support services, administrative units, and community service programs engage in best practices for outcomes assessment at the course, program, and institutional levels. Specific functions of the AVP for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning include: directing York in continuous quality improvement; obtaining, providing and curating informative data to drive decision-making and resource allocation; serving as an expert resource for outcomes assessment for institutional strategic planning; supporting academic programs in meeting the standards of accreditation by their professional accrediting bodies; and ensuring that York is compliant with all standards of accreditation.
In addition, the Assistant Vice President will: (1) lead the strategic planning cycle envisioning the next five years of activities; (2) develop and institutionalize systems to assess the overall effectiveness of the College in meeting its stated mission, and provide regular and frequent reports on the results of these assessments to the College President as well as to the broader College Community; (3) maintain an up-to-date and thorough acknowledgement of accreditation requirements (at institutional and program levels) and communicate changes and other important information to appropriate campus personnel; (4) ensure that the College conducts academic program assessment in accordance with college and university policies, (5) ensure appropriate institutional and unit level follow-up to recommendations and/or cited weaknesses observed as a result of all accreditation and review activities; (6) work with academic department chairs to design and implement effective student learning outcomes assessment processes, and monitor curricular/instructional changes and improvements resulting from these assessments; (7) provide leadership in the preparation and dissemination of data/reports that guide the continuous improvement of academic programs at the College; and (8) administer and coordinate the preparation of accreditation self-studies, and edit or provide editorial review to ensure the accuracy and acceptable format of reports that are prepared for external audiences.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
In addition to the above minimum qualifications, candidates should have the following:
An earned doctoral degree in a relevant academic field;
Eight years' of higher education experience in assessment, planning (student learning and institutional effectiveness) and regional and special accreditation;
Demonstrated ability (minimum of two years’ experience) in leading strategic planning and accreditation activities;
Strong quantitative and qualitative skills and experience in research methods and design and statistical analyses including predictive modeling and hierarchical/longitudinal analysis;
Effective oral, written, organizational, and graphic presentation skills and the ability to write and communicate data-rich reports that are easily understood by various stake holders.
The following qualifications are highly preferred:
Experience with assessing the effectiveness of college services at the program, unit and institutional levels and making recommendations for institutional improvements;
Demonstrated ability to work successfully and collaboratively with faculty and personnel at all administrative levels;
Ability to engage in evidence-based planning and decision-making as well as educating and engaging the community in these activities;
Familiarity with the Standards of Accreditation for accrediting agencies
Participation in professional research, assessment, and institutional effectiveness organizations at the regional, state, and national levels, keeping current in all aspects of the profession.
Forward thinking, innovative and proactive in identifying problems and implementing evidence-based improvements.
