Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the cabinet, the Chief Diversity Officer/Dean of Diversity will partner with the President and campus constituents in spearheading efforts to establish Diversity, Equity and Inclusive Excellence as core values throughout all aspects of the Queens College community. The Chief Diversity Officer will champion the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive college environment and lead the development of a vision and effective strategy to create such a culture. The role will work with all levels of the institution to promote processes and procedures to positively impact student, faculty and staff development, community relations, and organizational effectiveness by recommending diversity-oriented programs and initiatives. The Chief Diversity Officer will possess a deep commitment to these values and demonstrate action and accountability in advancing strategies to support them at all levels of the College.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

•Serve as an ambassador for diversity, equity, and inclusion and engage and inspire members of the internal and external community by raising awareness and illustrating the importance of these principles in support of student success and faculty development.

•Work closely with diversity partners at the campus to develop and monitor an appropriate college-wide diversity and inclusion plan and diversity statement that ensures both the college’s and university’s diversity and inclusion goals are consistently met.

•Advise the President and cabinet on issues relating to the college’s diversity and inclusion strategy, and develop and present an array of innovative ideas and program concepts for consideration, selection, and implementation.

•Using evidence-based research, design and deliver educational programming that fosters strong intergroup communication skills, supports inclusive pedagogical practices, and deepens the capacity of students, staff, and faculty to examine and reform both individual actions and institutional practices that exacerbate inequities.

•Conduct outreach and engagement efforts with internal and external groups and professional organizations interested in common issues and concerns related to equal employment opportunity/affirmative action to achieve synergy and interconnectedness between the College and broader community.

•Monitor national, legal, regulatory, political and intellectual trends in diversity in higher education, recommend best practices and emerging trends to inform program development in support of student success.

•Provide leadership and coordination for institutional educational and assessment initiatives, including inclusive excellence, equity scorecard, and campus climate studies, and evaluate diversity goals by developing metrics/scorecards and tracking progress. Update management at all levels on equal opportunity progress and issues through periodic reports.

•In collaboration with other campus stakeholders, collaborate in fundraising efforts in the areas of grant funding and management, major gifts and corporate and foundation relations as well as public organizations, alumni and other benefactors to advance institutional diversity and inclusion initiatives including research, the development of programs, and the external dissemination of successful practices.

•Create/develop training for search committees for faculty and administrative positions to help ensure that search processes adequately reach and consider candidates from diverse backgrounds and that committee members are aware of barriers to diversity and inclusion in the interview process (such as implicit bias and microaggressions).

•Facilitate group discussions and town hall meetings in response to campus, national and global events related to diversity and inclusion that impact students, faculty and staff.

•Convene, support and coordinate the college’s Diversity Committee.

•Collaborate with various Queens College groups, including CERRU (Center for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding), student clubs/organizations and the campus’s interfaith initiative, to promote bridge-building and tolerance.

•Create/develop mentorship models across campus in support of underrepresented groups of students, faculty and staff.

•Oversee the College’s status as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI).

•Support the implementation of the initiatives funded under grants to ensure the ideals of diversity, inclusion and equity are incorporated.

•Manage staff and operations of the Office of Compliance and Diversity.

•Oversee department’s compliance efforts in ensuring adherence to relevant city, state and federal statutes.


This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be a skilled relationship-builder, consultant, and advisor with outstanding interpersonal skills and a strong focus on teamwork and collaboration. Other qualifications include:

•Demonstrated leadership and experience in advancing diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and equity within a complex organization.

•Proven experience as a trainer and educator on issues of DEI and excellent command of contemporary diversity, equity, inclusion and multiculturalism concepts and issues.

•Exceptional skills in communications and interpersonal relations, including the ability to present complex issues to diverse internal and external audiences.

•Knowledge of and commitment to affirmative action and equal employment opportunity policies, laws and practices affecting higher education.

•Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of accountability throughout the institution.

•The ideal candidate will hold a doctorate or other terminal degree; or be a Tenured Associate Professor or Professor (external candidates will be considered for tenure in an appropriate department) with focused study and a research agenda that includes issues associated with dialogues of diversity, and inclusion.

•At least five years of experience in a leadership role handling issues related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in a higher education setting or in support of college student success.

•Experience with diverse employee populations including environments with structured collective bargaining agreements.

•High level of proficiency with the use of technology for management and communication including social media.
