In support of the campus mission, strategic plans and values the Provost's office seeks to fill the position of Dean of Education. The School of Education is one of four Schools in the College and is one of the largest schools of education in CUNY. The School consists of three departments: Secondary Education and Youth Services, Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and Educational and Community Programs. The School of Education collaborates with other teacher education programs throughout the College - TESOL, Family and Consumer Science Education, Music Education, and Physical Education who collectively comprise the unit which is fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Placements. The School of Education prepares a diverse pool of candidates to be effective teachers, counselors, and building leaders in a variety of settings, with a commitment to local public schools.

Reporting directly to the provost, the Dean provides overall leadership and coordination of all teacher education and other school professional programs in support of the Unit's commitment to our Core Values of Equity, Excellence, and Ethics.

Duties include but are not limited to:

-Work with faculty to develop and implement a vision for the School of Education and the larger Education Unit in an ever-changing diverse urban community.

-Set goals and targets for the division in accordance with the Strategic Plan of the college in line with the Education Unit's Core Values.

-Provide leadership in advancing curricula and developing new program initiatives to address the changing needs of students, society, and education professionals.

-Represent the Division of Education at national, state, and city meetings, including meetings at the New York State Education Department and the New York City Department of Education and communicate resulting information to the Unit.

-Develop budget requests in consultation with department chairs, and oversee the management of the

School of Education budget.

  • Leading efforts to recruit, develop, support, and retain students, faculty, and staff members in manner consistent with the College‚Äôs commitment to diversity.

-Support department chairs in securing resources for research and field-based operations.

-Lead accreditation and ongoing assessment activities.

-Work with the other Divisions to promote K-12 content area initiatives.

-Manage formal collaborations with schools and other educational entities

-Support faculty members' research, scholarly endeavors, and tenure and promotion candidacy.

-Provide leadership in writing grants and facilitate the preparation of grants by faculty.

-Contribute to fundraising efforts in the school and the college.


This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.


We seek a distinguished scholar and teacher who possesses:

-An earned doctoral degree and academic credentials appropriate for appointment as tenured full or associate professor in one of the departments of the Education Unit

-A minimum of three years of educational administrative experience at the level of department chair, associate dean, dean, or comparable position

-A significant record of research and scholarship

-A strong record of obtaining external funding

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice

  • Evidence of strong and successful support for diversity, anti-racism, and equitable experiences among faculty and student body

-Evidence of support for social justice-oriented and public-facing education scholarship and practice.

-Experience in successfully leading a diverse faculty group through the accreditation and/or

professional program review process involving both undergraduate and graduate degree program

-A record of effective, collaborative leadership in an advanced-degree and professional certificate granting institution

-Successful record of planning, directing, and implementing curriculum/program initiatives

-Leadership in budget preparation, administration, and accountability
