York College, founded in 1966, is a center of academic excellence in the heart of Jamaica, Queens. York’s academic programs are housed in three schools: The School of Arts & Sciences, The School of Business and Information Systems, and The School of Health Sciences and Professional Programs. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Student Support and Retention, the Junior Academic Advisor(s) will manage one or more facets of the college’s Academic Early Warning, Probation, At-Risk (Rising), entering Transfer, Pre-Professional, and SAP Advising services and support.

York College seeks a Junior Academic Advisor(s) to provide integral advisement and support to students through all stages of their academic journey at the college while navigating their academic careers. The Junior Academic Advisor will work with an assigned caseload of students and provide individualized outreach, needs assessment, academic guidance, timely feedback, and appropriate referrals to school and community support services and resources to navigate students’ academic progress, enhance their professional development, and facilitate their academic success.

In addition to the job summary above and the CUNY Title Overview below, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Provide comprehensive review and guidance for students who have the academic status of academic early warning, probation, continued probation, SAP and/or at-risk in addition to entering transfer and/or pre-professional students

  • Organize and facilitate events to support enrollment and retention of this cohort to maintain engagement and a sense of belonging to the college

  • Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding academic or external factors that contribute to their decrease in success, full degree completion, and progress

  • Work with the Director and Associate Director as well as Department Faculty advisors with planning, scheduling, coordination, and supervision of academic advising services and activities for the support and enhancement of the student’s academic success

  • Perform degree audits for degree candidates within the upper academic level status

  • Advise students on probation and support students with assistance in the re-admission appeal applications and process

  • Explore student's individual learning preferences during one-on-one meetings, and develop strategies for improvement appropriate to students’ specific learning needs; while assisting in creating student success strategies to aid retention and completion

  • Assist with coordinating and conducting seminars and workshops for new and continuing students.

  • Flexible schedule is required: day, evening, and weekend hours may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.

  • Customer service orientation is essential, being able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external constituents.

  • Proficiency in MS Office is strongly preferred; experience with academic or advising software such as EAB Navigate, DegreeWorks, or Schedule Builder a plus.

  • Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.

  • Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process

  • Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services

  • Monitors and evaluates students' educational progress by conducting academic progress audits

  • Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
