FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Earth & Physical Sciences at York College/CUNY, invites applications for a full-time Doctoral Lecturer position in Physics beginning Fall 2022. CUNY Lecturers and Doctoral Lecturers are members of the full-time faculty and are eligible for tenure through a “certificate of continuous employment” after the seventh annual appointment. The teaching load is 24 contact hours per year; department, college, and university level service are also expected. The successful candidate will primarily teach within the gateway physics sequence for science majors as well as in our general education courses.

The successful candidate will be part of a cohort of new faculty that will collaborate to develop coordinated pedagogical strategies across disciplines. They should be familiar with current research and evidence-based teaching practices in STEM, particularly physics, and lead the implementation and development of innovative teaching practices to support our diverse student body. The successful candidate will also design and build physics demonstrations for incorporation as a routine part of instruction at all levels. They will actively contribute to our program assessment projects and work with the physics faculty on improving course delivery, updating course materials to improve student outcomes – particularly in the gateway physics sequence – and curriculum development. The successful candidate will also explore launching externally funded efforts to support student success, close equity gaps, enhance recruitment and retention, and improve the teaching laboratories. Candidates with a doctoral degree in physics or a closely related discipline, experience in teaching at various levels of the undergraduate curriculum, and evidence of success in securing funding, will be preferred. The minimum requirement is a masters degree.

The City University of New York (CUNY) is the largest city university system in the world, and the third largest public university system in the United States. York College – one of the 11 four-year colleges in the CUNY system – is located in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens in New York City, the most diverse county in the nation. Our undergraduate population is largely drawn from Jamaica and surrounding neighborhoods; over seven thousand students attend York. We are a designated Title III Minority Serving Institution, and most of our students are the first in their family to attend college. Our department accounts for two-thirds of all the General Education Science credits earned on this campus, while the physics discipline courses enroll over 200 science majors per semester. We have a thriving physics major program, on par with national averages in size and educational outcomes.
