The Natural Sciences Department at LaGuardia Community College offers three undergraduate degree programs: Biology, Environmental Science, and Physical Science. The Department is home to 42 full-time faculty as well as 12 full-time CLTs and expert staff committed to equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their professional careers. The Department of Natural Sciences offers science- and non-science major’s courses. We offer in-person and online lectures and labs. The hired lecturer will work to improve the course structure, pedagogy, and course offerings of the Sustainable Urban Agriculture track within the A.S. Environmental Science program. LaGuardia Community College has an on-campus urban farm where classes will be conducted within climate-controlled and outdoor raised bed environments and an on-campus hydroponics research lab for soil-less vertical farming.

The successful candidate is expected to perform the following typical work duties:

  • Teach key program courses within the Sustainable Urban Agriculture track of the A.S. in Environmental Science, such as Soil Science, Sustainable Urban Agriculture, and Sustainable Vegetable Production.

  • Help work on the design, build, and running of LaGuardia’s urban outdoor farm and hydroponic research lab, and outdoor farm;

  • Coordinate all activities, teaching, and running of LaGuardia’s urban outdoor farm and hydroponic research lab, and outdoor farm;

  • Coordinate, conduct activities, and recruit at all high school, college, and state-wide recruitment and enrollment events.

  • Help sustain articulation agreements with high schools and 4-year schools for Environmental Science.

  • Actively engaged in pedagogical development toward achieving innovative and student-centered teaching excellence.

  • Work with faculty and the scientific community to continuously facilitate active learning in higher education by enhancing pedagogy and course design.

  • Teach courses in in-person, online, or hybrid class formats.

  • Share responsibility for committee and department assignments, including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Lecturer:

Master's degree in Agriculture, agricultural science, education specializing in agriculture or other agricultural areas (including, but not limited to agronomy, environmental/ornamental horticulture, forestry, natural resources, plant science, pomology, soil science, viticulture or other agriculture science) OR equivalent.

For Lecturer (Doctoral Schedule):

PhD in Agriculture, agricultural science, education specializing in agriculture or other related fields. Demonstrated scholarship and academic achievement.

For both:

  • 1 year or more of experience conducting farm/garden-based teaching and learning.

  • Experience in urban farming in a community/educational setting.

  • Ability to coordinate events on the farm and on-campus for education, recruitment, enrollment, and farm activities.

  • Experience in using social media and other high-tech outreach for recruitment and enrollment purposes.

  • Willingness to work outdoors year-round, especially in the summer, and ability to lift up to 40 lbs., standing/walking.

  • Commitment to helping ensure diverse, equitable, and inclusive programs that center Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

  • Skilled bilingual communicator (Español<>English) is plus but not necessary.

  • Highly organized and focused with superior follow-through and attention to detail.

  • Strong time management skills and experience meeting multiple project objectives.

  • Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills.

  • Avaiability to work evening and weekend hours.

COMPENSATION

For Lecturer: $52,072 - $69,983

For Lecturer (Doctoral Schedule: $ 56,821 - $75,215

Commensurate with Experience and Credentials.
