Veteran School Certifying Official (Student Life Specialist)
Veteran School Certifying Official (SCO)serves as primary contact for both Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense (DOD). Works closely with the Associate Director of Veterans Support Services, Veterans Academic Advisor, and cross departmental team to efficiently administer educational benefits to 180+ military connected students at Queens College. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Veterans Affairs, the SCOis responsible for certification of all veteran and military related education benefits in accordance with Federal and State guidelines:
Managing internal and external enrollment monitoring systems for accurate and timely reports to the VA and DOD.
Maintaining effective liaison relationships with the New York State Approving Agency (SAA), the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense to ensure compliance in reporting.
Advising campus leadership on issues to include regulations governing the various GI Bill certification procedures, enrollment monitoring procedures, and organizational suggestions to enhance services for military connected students.
Work in partnership with the Bursar and Financial Aid offices to assign appropriate anticipated VA awards in PeopleSoft for Post 9-11, Veterans Readiness and Employment, and TA recipients. Collaborates to resolve any issues and processing of VA debt letters related to student withdrawals from classes.
Must successfully complete initial U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Online School Official training and then annual training to remain compliant with Section 305 of the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017 and to continue employment as a School Certifying Official with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Serving as the primary School Certifying Official to prepare, review and submit appropriate documentation necessary for certification of student veteran education entitlements of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Submit enrollment certifications to VA utilizing VA ONCE; monitors student veteran enrollment and reports changes as needed.
Acting as a liaison between VA Veterans Readiness and Employment Specialist and Veterans with disabilities. Report appropriate anticipated VA awards to Bursar for Post 9-11 and Veterans Readiness and Employment recipients; disburse funds as received from the DVA and resolve any issues and processing of VA debt letters related to student withdrawals from classes
Monitoring the subject pursued by the student and certify to VA only those subjects that apply to the student's degree program, while ensuring they are making satisfactory progress and report when a student is terminated due to unsatisfactory progress or misconduct.
Providing information and technical assistance to potential and current Queens College students and their families seeking to apply for a wide variety of U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) educational programs
Preparing accurate, concise VA and university reports. Perform case files management, including archiving, destruction, and retrieval of files for VA Regional Office compliance audits.
Note: Must successfully complete U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Online School Official trainings.

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.
Current SCO Certification
Knowledge of VA programs, federal financial aid programs and regulations
Experience and knowledge of student development and higher education systems
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.
Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population

Administers one or more student affairs programs, providing program management, assistance with policy development, supervision and training of all professional and support staff, budget monitoring, and report preparation
Serves as a resource to student groups and/or populations as a consultant and advocate for their concerns
Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact
Produces workshops and materials to support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites
Performs related duties as assigned.
