LaGuardia Community College is seeking a senior manager who can advance and improve the College’s ability to help adult learners gain the education and skills to build their careers, and help businesses and organizations develop the talent they need to become more successful and profitable. The Vice President drives existing and emerging partnerships, connecting with policymakers, funders, industry professionals, employer intermediaries, unions, civic organizations, media, and the general public on issues of workforce development, economic education and the education needed to serve NY City’s adults. Reporting to the President, The Vice President of Adult and Continuing Education provides visionary, results-oriented leadership in delivering quality educational opportunities for thousands of individuals and organizations. The Vice President has primary responsibility for providing strategic leadership, direction and management for all efforts related to non-credit education and training. The Vice President takes a leadership role at the college in establishing and managing employer relations; creating innovative programs to serve our constituents through publicly and privately supported training and education, and staying abreast of trends in the nature of work, technology and educational delivery systems. The division serves between 30,000 and 35,000 individuals annually, and secures between $10 million and $15 million annually from grants, contracts and foundations. The Vice President manages over 500 full and part time individuals.
The Vice President oversees a broad array of current programs focused on adult career advancement, including the largest English as a Second Language program in the Northeast and a comprehensive set of programs for adult basic education and high school equivalency certification; as well as a diverse array of corporate and business services, including the nationally prominent Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, the 22 businesses in the on-site business incubator (NY Designs), and a range of career skills training that includes Technology; Healthcare; Advanced Industrial & Manufacturing Technology; Construction, Building Management & Sustainability; Business & Finance Education Training; & American Sign Language - English Interpretation.
The Vice President is tasked with establishing a robust system of management, assessment and communication to provide the necessary structures for effective functioning of a large and complex division. The Vice President is responsible for ensuring that the division generates the revenue necessary to support its operation through grants, contracts, fee for service courses and related revenue generating strategies. He/she is a member of the college President’s Executive Council and provides executive level support in policymaking and the overall operation of the College. The Vice President uses the creative flexibility of the division to field-test new programs and strategies that lead to new academic programs, new lines of business services, and centers of innovation.
The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial, creative, strategic thinker with exceptional organizational, managerial and leadership skills. The new Vice President must be an accomplished, entrepreneurial leader with a high level of political acumen. Experience in the community college sector is a plus. The next Vice President must be a sophisticated, experienced negotiator and builder of partnerships who can maneuver within a complex landscape including various city, state and national initiatives.
The Vice President will also accomplish the following responsibilities:
Divisional 1. Provide overall vision and supervision for the development and maintenance of quality educational programs that respond to workforce, economic, academic and community needs 2. Create robust partnerships with business, organizations, and funders to advance the economic and workforce development needs of the local community. 3. Set policy and make decisions regarding major program, staff and fiscal issues and delegate operational follow-up, as appropriate. 4. Stimulate and provide ongoing support for short and long-term fiscal and administrative planning for all areas of the Division that both responds to and anticipates community’s organizational, economic and service educational needs. 5. Spearhead new program development across Divisional areas, create strong linkages within all programs and with credit areas, and assist in finding necessary fiscal support. 6. Identify new trends in local, state, regional, national and international realms where Division could successfully provide educational services
College Wide 1. Serve on Executive Council, the College’s Senior Leadership Team 2. Chair Divisional Personnel & Budget committees. 3. Chair committees and handle periodic special assignments per Presidential request. 4. Work with all College areas to ensure full integration of Continuing Education into college policy and planning. 5. Collaborate with the Division of Academic Affairs to foster the development of non-credit to credit pathways.
External 1. Represent the College and the Division with university, state and city officials with regard to major Continuing Education issues. 2. Serve on various external committees, task forces, panels at local, state and national levels to advance issues and perspectives germane to adult and continuing education.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
