The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism. As the profession rapidly reinvents itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the tools to find stories and tell them effectively - using print, broadcast, visual, interactive, and social media. The school offers two master's degree programs: a Master of Arts in Journalism and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.

As part of the Newmark J-School’s Career Services team, the Associate Director for Career Programs works as part of a team of professionals to advise, counsel, and educate current students and recent graduates on defining career goals and formulating job search strategies. The principal role of the Associate Director for Career Programs is to empower students with life-long career management skills and enable them to make successful transitions from graduate school to professional life in for-profit and not-for­-profit settings via self assessment, research into career options and opportunities for experiential learning. The Associate Director provides innovative and high quality career development programming that supports the ongoing career choice process, job search skills building, and the overall leadership and professional development of graduate students to prepare them for career success. The Associate Director reports to the Director of Career Services and oversees successful implementation of programming by the Career Advising Team.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develops and leads career management programming, both in person and in virtual/webinar format;

  • Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive social networking strategy for Career Services aimed at communicating and fostering positive relationships with students, alumni, faculty, staff, and employers;

  • Collaborates with the Director, Associate Director Operations and Career Advisors to develop, deliver, and refine Newmark J-School Career programming, including orientation presentations, career fairs, job and internship search sessions, networking events, and workshops;

  • Coaches, advises, and prepares students and recent graduates in relation to their career management and

professional development;

  • Collaborates with the Director of Alumni Services and Associate Director Operations to develop and implement effective marketing strategies to alumni and current and potential employers;

  • Oversees the hiring, training, and management of the Center's Career Coaches, College and Work Study Assistants;

  • Creates communication and marketing plans designed to familiarize students with Center resources and programs;

  • Analyzes career advisement activity data and makes recommendations for improved programs and processes;

  • Develops monthly, semester, and annual reports on career advisement activities and outcomes;

  • Writes original career-related content for publication on social media to reach a broader audience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.

A preferred candidate should have:

-Master’s degree in human resources, counseling, higher education, business or related discipline.

  • Experience in counseling, career services, advising and recruiting in higher education.

  • Experience in career and executive coaching, or corporate career development.

  • Comprehensive understanding of and/or experience working with graduate students, with considerable knowledge of the types of industries and jobs generally pursued by graduate journalism students.

  • Journalism experience or familiarity with journalism is preferred, but not required.

  • Experience with computer and web technology used in career development and recruiting, including social networking platforms such as LinkedIn.

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to take initiative, manage multiple projects, and work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Comprehensive understanding of and/or experience working with MA students and/or graduates, with considerable knowledge of the types of industries and jobs generally pursued by graduate journalism students.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Develops and manages career development programs and services in a College of Unit and assumes a leadership role in the design and delivery of creative approaches to career education and planning.

  • Assists in unit planning, such as setting goals and objectives, and monitors status of progress toward meeting goals

  • Designs and produces outcomes assessment reports; reviews outcomes and feedback and recommends strategies to expand and improve services.

  • Directs a portfolio of targeted career programs, such as mentoring, internship, and alumni programs

  • Manages one or more aspects of career office operations, such as on-campus recruiting

  • Evaluates new technologies, assessment materials, and other career tools, makes recommendations, and acquires/implements them

  • May counsel a limited number of students

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
